Valve clearances will also effect the decompression valve in the engine, if they are too wide the valve lifter will not work and the battary will not have enough energy to crack the engine.
do you know how to check and see if mower is firing if so check and see if it quit firing by pulling the spark plug and put it in the wire like youre hooking it up and hold the end with the resister on it against a piece of metal on the engine and turn the engine over and see if you see a spark at the resister. ( note ) it will shock you if you touch the end so use a screw driver to hold it against the metal. if its not sparking you have a firing problem and may need to go to the shop.
The fuel pump works off vacuum from the engine. Please be Careful. If you take the hose off the output side ,and try to turn the engine over, Fuel should be coming out of the hose. If it is, the carburetor has a clogged and needs to be cleaned out. If there is not gas coming out the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Good Day.
