Re: lcd problem for laptop

I don't think I have a function key on my desktop HP keyboard. I have one on my laptop and tried that. Also tried all the other ctrl/alt/etc, with the F5 keys to no avail. My best guess is the cable. Do you have any other thoughts? r

I've got a 4 port switch with two computers hooked up - a desktop and a Lenovo Thinkpad R60 laptop - the desktop works perfect but when I switch to the laptop only the keyboard works - no video or mouse

The Thinkpad does not divert the video automatically to the external monitor via the KVM switch, you need to divert the video by pressing on the Fn key and the press the F7 key to toggle between the Thinkpad's LCD screen and the video port/external monitor. You may need to use a separate USB mouse connected to the Thinkpad.

My KVM recognizes my Windows7 laptop, but does not recognize my old XP desktop. The lights switch places on the KVM when I double-click the ScrLk key, but they go between active laptop screen and black...

Try rebooting sometimes 2 or 3 times. You can also try plugging in a USB mouse while the KVM switch is plugged in. Then go to the device manager and try to detect the new hardware

Do you understand that most of the help you receive here is people helping people for free.
In other words we don't get paid from fixya...
What you should do is call comcast and there techs can take over your computer and fix the settings in two minutes after they receive your information about your equipment. I agree that Microsoft could nor would help other then show you how to make your connections if you are using MS instead of Linksys connections. But just that fact that someone tried to help you make me think that person was not lazy.
Now if you think me lazy, ok but the best solution, fastest solution, would be to contact Comcast, and mention you are paying them for service. Good evening.

The reason why this is happening is because the notebook keeps on loosing it's resolution and the GCS62 can't remember what's the resolution set to the notebook.

To resolve this problem, please follow the steps below:

1. Disconnect the tower from the GCS62 and leave the problem computer (notebook)still connected to the KVM switch.

2. Set your desired resolution (ex. 1280x768) to the notebook.

3. Restart the notebook while it's connected to the KVM switch.

4. The GCS62 will remember the resolution you set to the computer.

5. After rebooting the notebook, you may now reconnect the other computer and try to toggle to see if you will get the same problem.

But doing these steps should resolve the issue.

Laptop lcd

On laptops there is usually a soft switch to change the way video output is routed. The keypad should have an "FN" key on it (blue lettering mostly on the lower left of keyboard). Also look for one of the "F" keys (F1, F2, etc) to have an icon for a screen/blank screen. Hold done the FN while hitting the appropriate F key. The way it normally goes each time you press - laptop LCD only, VGA output, both, off. Sometimes just first 3 or the order may be different. When just VGA enabled or off the laptop screen will be blank.

When using a KVM switch, you must have the VGA ouput enabled from the laptop.

1. Start pressing F8 right after you reboot...
2. Then select Safe Mode from the list of choices..
3. Use System Restore to go back to a date previous to the one you did you upgrade..

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Best of luck!

Jackboy is right. When did the picture fail on you and what were you doing? Can you see any picture at all even the smallest trace?

KVM Monitor resolution out of frequency and will not display

Restart your system in a VGA mode (you will find this below Safe Mode, by pressing F8 before windows is loading) This way yours screen resolution will be at the very low frequency then you can change it back to the resolution you like. Eg. 800x600 or 1024x768. Remember to keep your Screen refresh rate lower like 75Mhz
