On laptops there is usually a soft switch to change the way video output is routed. The keypad should have an "FN" key on it (blue lettering mostly on the lower left of keyboard). Also look for one of the "F" keys (F1, F2, etc) to have an icon for a screen/blank screen. Hold done the FN while hitting the appropriate F key. The way it normally goes each time you press - laptop LCD only, VGA output, both, off. Sometimes just first 3 or the order may be different. When just VGA enabled or off the laptop screen will be blank.
When using a KVM switch, you must have the VGA ouput enabled from the laptop.
