Windows xp uses virtual memory which is a partition on your hard drive. do a defrag on your hard drive. where your windows parameters is located, make sure virtual memory is set to automatic. if you can afford it increase your on board RAM to at least 512.

Will Windows XP work on a Compaq 5020?

Yes, but it will be somewhat slow on such a old computer. I would recommend getting a new computer or buying a newer used computer, for example from ebay.

Relating to ram

I am not sure what motherboard you have, but I would suspect that your computer will take at least 2 sticks of 512 MB each.
You didn't say what operating system you are using. If you are using Windows 98, 128 MB is fine. If you are using Windows XP, you should have at least 10x that, or 1GB to run correctly.
You really do need to know how much memory your computer will support, so you can go on the manufacturer's site and look it up or use the manual that came with the computer, if you still have it.

Unable to install Windows xp

If you can afford it i'd look at trying another stick of 256 or a new 512 stick, XP doesn't really like anything under 512 and it pretty much won't run at all with 128, so if you can get it cheaply try that first if that doesn't fix it let me know
