Hello rbirnale,

Are you using a CD? Do other disks work? Or is it just that disk that gives that error? If CD is a problem, I would try to get another copy, if that is not possible... I have used cd fixer machines before, they have worked well for me in the past.

I would suggest taking it to a repair shop and asking them to perform a "MEMTEST" the chances are that one of your memory modules has failed. Usually you would have two modules inside a pc or laptop. if one of them fails it stops everything from working. You probably just need to replace one of them at a cost of around £20 - £30 and this will usually resolve your problem.

My dell 600 goes into the blue screen and Wont Load (Error mesg)

This is quite common, and easy to fix, I have included a link below to help you.

Insert the Windows Recovery CD into the disk drive and reboot the computer.
Check the computer's boot order. This must be done from the BIOS set-up before boot begins. Pressing "F2" will start the BIOS set up on most PCs. (This is not always the case, and the boot screens will tell you which button will take you to the system set-up.) Make sure that your CD drive comes before your hard disk in the boot order.
Select the drive with the Windows installation you wish to repair when you see the menu to select a hard disk drives. If you have mistakenly swapped a Windows Installation CD for the recovery disk, enter the automated system recovery and place the recovery disk in the drive when prompted to do so.
Select the drive that needs to be prepared. You will be asked for the administrator password. Enter the administrator account password if one has been set up.
Type "expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32." Windows is not case sensitive, but you must spell the commands correctly. This copies the ntoskernel.exe file to the approrpriate directory.
Press "Y" when the program asks if you want to proceed.
Enter the exit command and the reboot the system. Take the CD out of the drive and Windows should load correctly.

No boot sector on hard disk - No bootable devices - strike F1 to

AFAIK all XP disks were bootable so maybe check your bios options.
If they are correct and it still does not boot them goto and download the floppy setup disks for XP. You could then set your laptop to boot from floppy and install xp from there.

Call Dell if under warranty. Start shopping for a replacement hdd if outside of warranty. You'll need
your OS disks that came with computer (hopefully). If you don't have OS/recovery disks, you can get
them from Dell or even using somebody elses (match version with sticker on your laptop).

Check the hdd connection underneath laptop - make sure cable is not loose, etc.

Probably safe to say your data is gone unless you're willing to spend $$.

No boot sector on hard disk Dell C800

It sounds like you bought the computer without an operating system, if you just bought it you need to install an OS (Windows or linux).

You might be able to get recovery discs from Dell if this sytem is entitled to a windows install. Does it have a Windows OEM sticker on the bottom?

In short, You need to install an Operating System.

You can submit a form to request replacement CDs at

You may need to do a ownership transfer with Dell before they will send this there is a form for this as well or you could call customer care

Note forms are all for US customers
