Question about Garmin StreetPilot C330 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

C330 HELLO, I JUST GOT THIS C330 FOR X-MAS. Q: IS IT PRELOADED WITH 2008 MAPS? IF NOT, WHY WOULD WE HAVE TO PAY FOR 2008 UPDATE WHEN WE JUST GOT IT 6 DAYS BEFORE 2008? JUST A BIT CONFUSED. THERE WASNT MUCH FOR LITATURE IN THE BOX AND NOT MUCH INFORMATION IN SIDE AS WELL. THE WEB PAGES I KEEP GOING TOO, JUST WANT ME TO PURCHASE UPDATES. IF THIS ISNT PRELOADED WITH 2008 AND CURRENT. I WILL RETURN IT FOR A BRAND THAT ALREADY HAS THIS OPTION. THANK YOU. I WAIT YOUR ANSWERS.

I just filed a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General regarding this map issue. The unit works great, but the map is obsolte and it looks like I'm driving through cornfields on roads that have been open for 2 years.

Some website bulletin boards (Amazon for one) posted that Garmin provided them the updated software for free.

That was not the case when I contacted Garmin about this issue. They told me I had to pay $70.

Go to the Garmin site to see if you have to pay for this update. Enter the unit serial number to find latest update for your unit and if you haven't register your unit then register it to see if you are eligible for a free upgrade. If your registration is over 6 month old then most likely you will have to pay for the upgradeC330 - 1e40710.png

Go to the "Where to?" screen and press the little wrench icon. Now select Map. Now select Map Info. You will see the following, it will show you the current Map version. As you can see the Map version on this unit is v8 which is not the lastest maps. Version 2008 is the latest as of jan 12, 2008

Need to up date maps

Create an account at myGarmin regsiter your unit ID number this will allow you to unlock the maps that you buy. You then have two options the first requires you to have an NT 2009 or 2008 map already installed.
nüMaps Lifetime™This will cost you £99.99 and is a on off payment Remember — this map update can only be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your Garmin GPS device. For example, a Garmin GPS device preloaded with North America maps only cannot be updated with a nüMaps Lifetime Europe Map Update, and vice versa. Check product compatibility. nüMaps Onetime™ This will cost you £79.99 and does not rely on having a map already installed.
The City Navigator® Europe NT comes on a DVD or you can download it.

Free map updates for Garmin c330

Garmin has released new maps. Most of their units are entitled to a free update if the unit was purchased recently Just a heads up to anyone who recently purchased a C330. According to Garmin's tech support, the map udate 2008 is not free to those of us that recently purchased a C330. Only to those who purchased a C340 and up. Their excuse is that it is a "low end" unit, and also that the memory cannot hold the full US maps on the DVD. Gee, I can purchase the update for $69.99 and load a subset of the maps if I want, according to the person in tech support, but I cannot receive it as a free update. So, apparently buyer beware if you purchase Garmin's "low end" units. You will apparently not be able to receive a free update of maps, even if the unit you buy is already out of date.

Garmin c330 update

What are you trying to update, firmware or maps? Firmware updates ae free from Garmin. Just go to www.garmin.com and download the WebUpdater. If you are trying to update the maps, these are available for purchase in CD or SD card formats, also from Garmin or your local retailer. They should be approx. $70.

Putting maps on sd memory card

(Untried)
For C330 owners that want to have both Canada and US 2008 map update on their GPS this is what you have to do.

Must have:
1 - Street pilot C330

2 - 512mb SD card
3 - SD card reader of some form (some cameras will suffice)
4 - Garmin 2008 Map Update North America

What to DO:

1 - connect the GPS to the computer
2 - Insert the Map update disk
3 - Install the Lower 48 states, United States
(Reason - the C330 has around 1000mb of memory and the "US 48 states" map uses around 900mb" while Canada uses 400mb...which is why you will need that 512mb SD card later)

4 - Once the GPS is updated with the US map. Browse the Map update disk contents. This can be done with going to "My Computer" right click on your CD/DVD drive and click on "Explore"

5 - Open the folder called "img"

6 - Copy the file called "gmappromU.img" file is around 430mb. (This is the map file for Canada)

7 - Insert your SD card into your card reader and connect it to your computer. A window should pop up. If not you should see it on your "My Computer"

8 - Once you have navigated your way into the SD card directory. Create a folder on the SD card named "garmin" (no caps)

9 - Go into your newly created "garmin" folder right click and paste the "gmappromU.img" file. (This may take upto 20 to 30 mins)

10 - Once the process is complete, Rename the "gmappromU.img" file to --> "gmapsupp.img" (watch for spelling, no caps at all)

11 - Remove the SD card, Turn off your GPS, Insert SD card into GPS.

12 - Turn on GPS, let it load, and there you have it, the FULL North America Map.

When you are searching a state or province (depending where you are located) it will give you an option which map to use, Canada/Alaska or the lower 48 US states. Select your map and you are set to Go.

Did you try zooming either "in" or "out" ??? Did you verify that the new maps are installed? Did you try doing a reset?
