How do I remove the CMOS battery on a Dell Inspiron 6400 I'm trying to fix a problem where I get a black screen on start-up. I've replaced the battery, power cord, ram and rest the bios (Holding Power down with laptop unplugged and batter out for 60 seconds) I want to try removing the CMOS batter and see if this works. Thank you

You need to remove keyboard first, and cmos battery is right under it if I'm not mistaken.

Black screen issue I believe is related to video card. Anyways try to update bios too.

How can i reset a forgotten cmos pass word

You need to remove the CMOS battery ( usually located under the keyboard ) AND the notebooks battery. Wait 3 or 4 minutes. replace the batteries . That should restore the COMS properly.

My laptop is a dell 6400 inspiron, error code :"invalid configuration information- please run SETUP program"

Sounds like your CMOS battery on the system board is dead. This is a small dime sized battery that applies a small voltage to your BIOS settings so that when you remove or turn off power it retains it's settings.
Here is a link showing the coin cell battery:

DELL LAPTOP INSPIRON 6400 MY LAPTOP BATTERY IS SHOWING STATUS ( UNKNOWN ) ON WINDOWS & ON BIOS IT SAYSS BATTERY NOT INSTALLED

Here are my recommendations for this issue:

1. Reseat the battery.
2. Remove All External Components
3. Check the battery connectors on the battery and the system. Examine the connector on the battery and the system. Make sure that there is no physical damage and that it is clear of debris.
4. Remove All External Components
5. Try a known-good battery in the system, if available.

Dell INSPIRON 6400 locked

You will have to go into the laptop I am affraid.
If you are not familiar with the internals of laptops I would advise you take it to a laptop service centre near you.
If you are confident then read on..
Remove the battery and mains power from the laptop.
Remove the plastic strip between the keyboard and the bottom of the screen (where the model number is printed)
Pop the keyboard out (careful of the connector ribbon)
Under the keyboard there is a metal cover. Remove that (keep the screws with it)
Under there if you look closely at the motherboard you will find a marking of CMOS with 2 solder pads side by side right next to it.
Press something metal between the 2 pads for a few seconds.
Before you put it all back together, just reconnect the power button panel, and use mains power to try and start the laptop. If all is well then the cmos will be clear and the password will be gone.
Reassemble..

Failing that (or instead of that), remove all power to the laptop, and disconnect the cmos battery for 10 seconds. The cmos battery will look like a blob of plastic that has 2 wires going to a connector. It will be very small (the connector)

Password Bios Losse

If you are the rightful owner dell will help you reset this.
but it will take some time.
or
you will have to remove the cmos battery (looks like a coin) under the keyboard and main battery
wait a few mins and try again.
if that does not work then only some techs knows what chip to short to clear.
