Paper feeder won't follow through (by 6 users)

posted by Morena45 on Dec 26, 2007

When I try to print on my lexmark x73 printer, the paper will pull down into the feeder and stop half way. Then the green light onthe left will blink continuously. What should I do to get the paper to continue to feed through the printer.

My paper isn't catching either. My lexmark X73 won't scan either. I just got it from my uncle a few days ago and it worked great until today. The green light just keeps blinking. Help!

paper is not catching through feeder

My paper goes about halfway down and then stops. I have tried "force" pulling a sheet through to unjam it, but it isn't jammed. I also tried feeding it a thicker sheet of paper. Next, I will try the solution offered below and disassemble it. If that works, great. Otherwise, I'll just have to buy a new printer. However, we've had this one several years and find it is easy enough for my 87 yo dad to use.

The feeder mechanism has so to speak come undone and the printer needs taking aprt and putting back together with the feeder and the cogs interacting with eachother. Ther is a small metal clip lick tensioner to keep it in contact with the cogs, if the clip has come off it just needs securing back in place.

To get the printer apart from what I remember as I've trashed the printer now there are a few screws and when those are removed you have to prise the plastic apart forcibly and pull out the flat cable leading to the scanner.
But to be honest these printers are so flimsily put together it's very easy to break when taking apart and you may be better off getting an all in one that's better made.

I found olasNick's comments very worthwhile. I was also having a paper feed problem and carefully disabled my LEX73 and now clearly understand the comments regarding prying it apart. There are plastic clips that hold all of the plastic together, by gently prying and pushing the clips at the same time I was able to get it apart without breaking any plastic. Once inside the problem was obvious, a broken gear on the roller assembly. I guess I could order a new gear from LEX but at this point, I think I'll take it a sign to retire this old workhorse. I think I got this printer about 10 years ago and can't imagine how many reams of paper have gone through this printer. It doesn't owe me anything.
