I have a Carrier system & Honeywell thermostat. The entire system is off (via the thermostat) and fan is set to auto. The outside condenser unit is running constantly, though.

- Thanks so much for the help! Do you know where this contactor would be located? How big is it? What does it look like?
On A/C units, there is a low voltage line that leads to a contactor, which engages to close the high voltage circuit to the condensor unit. Over time, the accual contacts in the contactor can weld themselves together. Try shutting off your furnace breaker but leaving on the one for the outside condensor unit. If it still runs, your contactor probably needs replaced. Contact a licensed electrician or HVAC contractor and tell them you think your contactor is in need of replacement. Is a fairly simple and quick replace, but the contactor itself is not cheap.

- It would be located within the outside condensing unit itself. They are most often black with 3 screws on the top and 3 on the bottom with heavy gauge wire going to them. There is sometimes small screws to remove a small cover over the contacts to see them, but there is 240 volts there so do not mess with unless you know what you are doing. I highly recomend someone licensed to do so.

WHEN THIS HAPPENS I OPEN UP THE UNIT OUTSIDE & THERE IS ONLY ONE TEST LIGHT FLASSING. I HAVE TO SHORT OUT THE TEST PINS & THEN IT WILL WORK FOR JUST A LITTLE WHILE THEN I HAVE TO REPEAT THE ABOVE STEPS.
