In connecting through a wifi, there are two factors to consider. (1) Wireless Router broadcast and (2) Wireless Receiver.
Make sure that your network router is broadcasting wireless internet or wifi. Also, you have to know if you need a pass key or password in order to connect to the wireless network.
Now, given that there is a wifi spot, your laptop should automatically recognize the wifi broadcast and negotiate connection without your intervention. This will only happen IF AND ONLY IF your laptop has a wifi radio receiver and that it is TURNED ON. When it is turned ON, it will connect you immediately if the network has no pass key set. If there is, then you have to enter that key when you try to manually connect it. (Right click on wireless network icon on system tray. Then it should say: Wireless Network Available. Then Click CONNECT)
To turn your wifi radio receiver ON, slide a switch button to ON position depending on your laptop model. If you dont have that kind of switch, look for the wifi icon printed in the keyboard keys. In some laptop, it is in F2. Now Press FN+F2 to turn wifi radio receiever ON and OFF.
I think you have a wireless enable/disable switch, the rightmost in the row above your keyboard, you must have accidentally pressed it. Press it again to turn the wireless network card on, it should come up and connect in a couple of moments.
Open Internet Explorer, go to TOOLS drop down menu, pick INTERNET OPTIONS, click on the CONNECTIONS tab, and click the radio button NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION. Then close IE and restart it. I hope this helps and good luck. Please vote appropriately and leave a comment.
Thanks for the info about the neighbor. This narrows the problem down considerably. Generally we know your router is working and that your laptop cannot see it. The two most likely issues are that your wireless radio is turned off(small switch on the outer lip of the laptop) or you may be using the wrong utility to try to set up the connection.
First look around the outer lip of the toshiba for a small(4mm) switch, there is a small light next to it. if the light is out, your radio is off. Flip the switch and ensure the light is on, once on try connecting to the network. If it works you're done, if not please reply with some additional info including the model number of the laptop(please include both on the bottom of the laptop) also include whatever error message or system message is on the wireless utility as well as the name on the top of the wireless connection window so I can be sure which next step is required.
If you have a laptop and it has built in wireless adapter, it may have a switch or a button that you need to switch on in to turn on the wireless connection radio. Usually, it can be found on the sides or on the front panel of the laptop. On other laptops, you will need to hit some combination of keys on the laptop's keyboard to turn on the wireless connection radio, for example, Fn+F5. Please refer to the manual of your laptop for reference on how to turn on or enable its wireless radio.
