Well I have the WD 250GB that is dying on me right now so I open it up to see what is making the sound to my suprise I found that I could remove the USB connection to the hard drive. So I think you can fix it. Just buy a cheap hard drive and open that up and take the part from one to fix the other that is if the info on the broken hard drive is valuble to you.
If you have the technical know how and feel confident with a soldering iron then you will have little problems... however, you will probably find your HD is actually a SATA drive inside...
What this means is if you remove it altogether and place it in your computer you will get a vast sopeed imporvement.

plugged in a 15volt power cord into a 250 GB Western Digital External HD - My book. Now, light lights, but disk does not spin. I figured the power supply board got smoked. I have another WD book that I want to swap the drive into. I can't figure out how to open the case.
