I have a 5 year old Samsung SMH7187STD over the range microwave. It begins every cooking operations fine, but shuts off (loss of all power) and restarts after a very short time. When using just time cook, just a couple of seconds, longer (about 15 seconds) when using the pre-programmed buttons. It started this problem a few months ago and has progressively become more frequent and now happens during every attempted use. Any ideas, my amateur investigation today indicates possibly the magnetron's thermal cutout?

- Thanks for the info. The fan appears to be operating just fine and the air intake grill is not plugged. Is the replacement of the magnetron a do-it yourself type job. Is the magnetron accessed/replaced with the microwave installed or will it need to be uninstalled to access/replace?
This is usually due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode.it needs to be properly checked on circuit and repaired by a professional tech manually. Also Make sure you hear the fan is still operating in your microwave. Next is to make sure the air intake grill on your microwave is not plugged up with air borne dust and dirt.if yes clean it.Use an old tooth brush to help clean off the grille area thanks, keep updated and please rate the solution positively
Yes it sounds like a magnetron thermal cut out, but also make sure your internal cooling fan is running. If the internal cooling fan blade moved on the shaft and is hitting something, or the fan motor is bad, that would cause the thermal cut out to trip. The longer run time for the pre-programed buttons is most likely just the additional start up time on those cycles. The actual time power is on to the mag tube is most likely about the same.
