Question about Maytag LAT2300 Top Load Washer
Hi! My Maytag washer model number LAT9316AAE fills up with water and then makes a humming sound like it is running but it barely moves, if at all. So apparently it doesn't agitate or spin. It does drain though, although it left the clothes very wet since it was not spinning. I have not had a chance to check on the belts or anything since I have to move it out of a closet to do this. I was hoping to have some things to look for before I move it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's not easy dragging 3 kids to the laundry mat. :) Thanks!
SOURCE: washer won't spin or agitate
On this model the motor turns one way for spin and the other for agitation. This action is controlled by a thrust bearing located just undernieth the plastic cap on the center pully. Many people are thrown off thinking a transmission problem when it's actually this thrust bearing kit. However, it could be the trans. If so you have a 5 year warranty on it, part only. There is also a number of service flashes on this model including: snubber kit, flash number 26-756, which has to do with vibration during spin. Things you want to make sure of is that the pump is not seized up, leakage from the center tub on to the bearing and brake. You may want to call Maytag and inquire about the service flashes on this model, you could be covered. Other than that my guess without seeing it would be the thrust bearing kit, part number 12500036. Not a bad job, the kit comes with instructions. The hardest part is getting that last washer on. Before you try to take the panel apart to remove the timer you need to check that the electrical connections to the pump are o.k. and whether the pump is getting power when it's time to drain. If you have to replace the timer you need to take the back panel off first.

I had the same problem with my Atlantis a couple of months ago. It turned out to be the bearing for the tub drive pulley. When you look under the washer there are three pulleys. The one for the motor is ont he left, the drain pulley on the right and the big one in the middle for the tub. What I found is that when the bearing went bad, the tub would fill and turn for washing, but it would not turn at all for spinning. I could turn the pulley by hand but the tub refused to budge. I removed the main pulley and could see that the bearing had exploded. You can't buy just the bearing but the whole pulley kit is like $35 so I got off easy. I put the machine back together (which is tricky) but it works fine now. The pulley kit comes with complete instructions but it's really straightforward. The tricky part is that you have to pull down on the end of the drive shaft in order to get the retainer ring onto the pulley. That can be difficult if you don't have a lot of room to work or have a partner to assist. You can replace the whole thing or just the bearing and save the pulley for a rainy day if you want. I opted for the whole replacement. But I saved the old. cause ya neva know!
