Tv guide/tuner problems

I lost the tv guide function and I I cannot keep some channels on the DTV side. I am not on cable, just OTA HDTV antenna. I get the major stations, but PBS and some other indie chnls will go away. I would reset the channel search, and they will come back briefly. Mostly, the tv guide function is dead. Everything else is fine.

Re: tv guide/tuner problems

Most likely the TV Guide is broadcast from the OTA PBS channel. I don't know why its being lost. I'm thinking its probably a firmware problem of some sort. Adding the PBS channel back in, making sure the signal comes in ok and leaving the TV off for a while might help.

How do I get television channels do I need a antenna without cable?

Yes, you will need an antenna to get live OTA TV. The Haier HL42XR1 has an ATSC (digital OTA) tuner and a NTSC (analog OTA) tuner. Your location and distance to the local transmitters will determine what type of antenna will be best. See or and enter your address. gives a full list of all stations you may be able to receive depending on your antenna (indoor, outdoor, height, direction). If you share the signal from the antenna with another device, you may need an amplifier to maintain the signal strength. (Warning, when amplifiers fail, the signal can become worse than the unamplified signal. With digital TV, signals are either strong enough for the tuner to understand or a "no signal" message will appear.)

I hope this helps.

The DTV input in my GV46L stays black. Why?

You don't say what you are trying to input but take note that your model does not have a digital tuner on the DTV input. If you use a digital OTA antenna, the signal must first go through a digital converter or tuner before it goes into the DTV input. The DTV/ANT input is only cable ready. There is no digital tuner in the TV to activate the DTV menu.

Why won't my new Vizio DTV work on an antenna without the digital box?

Do you have the antenna aimed correctly and the correct antenna for the distance between your location and the stations? Check and for the directions to the stations you should be able to receive. Antennaweb assumes an external antenna and is very conservative in the station list. TVfool gives the stations you should get with various different types of antennas. Tall trees and buildings will block signal strength so consider the environment around you.

With digital signals, if you do not have enough signal strength for a given tuner, the channel will not come in. An amplifier may help you get the signal, particularly if the signal is shared to several devices. Failure of an amplifier or lightning surge protection can stop the signal from reaching the TV. A surge through the antenna can damage the tuner.

A damaged cable can also be a source of a problem. Check the outside portion of the wire as well as the interior wires. Replace any that have damaged insulation or ends.

For this TV, if you have done a channel scan with the TV set to the Input TV/DTV, and the Signal Source set to Antenna. Turn the antenna and then set the Additional Scan to On. (Menu > TV > Channels > Additional Scan.) Then do another channel scan.

Help I cannot get any tv channels on mo lg 32 combo

What is your TV source? If you are looking for OTA (over the air) signals, you may need to modify your antenna setup. An external antenna rotated to the correct direction usually works best. See and for details of what stations you may receive OTA. Antennaweb is much more conservative in the channel availability list than TVfool is. On both sites, enter your street adress for the details.

If you had a recent surge through your antenna, then you may have to repair/replace the TV tuner. (My household lost three CRT TVafter a nearby lightning strike.)

( lists only my area as only getting 2 channels with an external antenna (one transmitter source - 10 miles away). We actually get more - the other channels are transmitted from ~30 miles away.)

Not able to scan for digital OTA channels on a JVC LT-32X667 LCD

Seeing as it does not have a digital tuner in it, I would think this would be the problem, you will have to get a box for it.

I can't scan DTV channels on my vizio 52''

do you have antenna or cable? if you have antena hook directly to the coax, go to menu, TV, tuner and pick antenna and scan. If you have cable hook directly to your coax repeat the previous step but pick cable instead of antenna. Notice if you have a cable box, you will not need to scan for channel since it will be on channel 3, 4 or any other input you may use.

Have a vizio lcd tv . can not get any channels today with the switch over to digital. i use an antenna

Your TV probably does not have a digital tuner connected to the DTV/ANT input. Mine didn't. I had to connect the digital antenna to a digital converter box THEN go to the DTV/ANT input. Only then would it activate the DTV menu and allow me to scan for channels. If your TV worked fine with Cable TV connected to the input, it was because your signal was coming from the digital tuner in your DVR, or your cable provider was sending you an unscrambled digital signal (not likely).
I used a digital converter box I had purchased with the government $40 coupon back in 2009 but the resolution is only 480 and looks like a Monet or Renoir. Now I am shopping for a high quality tuner.

Vizio remote

The remotes for the TV and Direct TV box are universal remotes that can operate very basic functions for whatever else they are programmed to control. If you can program the TVs remote to operate the Direct TV box it will basically only control power and channel. Maybe something else, but not much. The same goes for the Direct TV remote. It will control basic functions on the TV; power, channel & volume. Best bet would be to purchase a universal remote that can learn functions from the original or just keep both remotes available by the TV.

PIP (Picture In Picture) - Your television should have the capability because it has two built in tuners. It can show two channels at the same time or show one channel and one video source (whatever is connected to the audio/video inputs). However, because you are using DTV (Direct TV) you are very limited because you are not using the built in tuners on your television. You should be able to see one picture from the DTV channel and one from lets say your DVD player. If your DTV box has two tuners built in then you should have the PIP capabilities from your DTV and not your television. I'm guessing your DTV is a single tuner (one satellite cable to your box). If you want to watch two different channels you'll need to either upgrade your box or attach another box to your television.

Option: you could also connect an antenna to your television this way you can use the PIP function. Obviously you'll only be able to view whatever local stations you can get with the antenna. Depending on where you live you might or might not have a lot of channels to choose from.
