Question about Radio Shack Pro-2018 Scanner
My brother & I bought my mother a scanner for Christmas. I read the manual, programmed the four stations that she wants, and have it set to scan. I watch the scanning as it occurs in the display screen. The problem is that when it picks up a signal, it is impossible to understand.
The manual only says one little bit about what to do with "squelch". I don't know what the word "squelch" even means. I have it not set so that it's not hissing (all the way counter-clockwise), but not quite halfway toward "maximum", either. When a voice comes on we run to the scanner to attempt to adjust the volume and/or the squelch, but can't seem to get anything that is intelligible.
Please help with how to adjust the audio ... and please explain what "squelch" means. Thank you!
Hi, you do not mention where you are located, but my first guess is that you are trying to listen to some freq's that are not compatable with your scanner. The squelch you use to quiet the white noise, so when someone keys their mic the squelch opens easy and allows you to hear them. The scanner you have is a standard FM analog style scanner. Nowdays there is also digital and encripted, trunktracking, and more. None of the different styles are compatable. On my scanners at home I run an external antenna to pull in a greater range. Our local area still runs the standard FM radios. If you respond back with some info, I might be able to narrow the problem down further.
Thank you,,, Mechanic
