Kenmore 70 series washing machine making screeching noise

My 20 y.o. Kenmore washing machine Model # 11082870810 is making a screeching noise when spinning. Water flows in and out fine. I smell something either burning or hot. The washer will then stop and but continue to buzz until I turn off the machine. Is it the motor or the drive. If so, how do I check each one to see if it is working properly or not? I took off the motor to see if the plastic and rubber coupling parts were severely worn, but to my amazement, the parts were only slightly worn. Could that still be the cause? Thank you for your help. P.S. Do you know the cubic feet capacity of this washer?

Thanks for your reply. The couple was in good shape and was not cracked, in fact it was very tight on the shaft.

Is there any way to check the motor with an ohm meter to verify it is bad?

If both things have something to do with one another. It sounds like a bad motor. When you removed the coupler, did you notice if the part that goes over the shafts might have been cracked. If one is, it will spin on the shaft. But the motor keeps coming up when I read your description.

Kenmore Heavy Duty Series 70 washing machine will not spin during draining, but makes a lot of noise like gears grinding. What's the cause and can it be repaired at a reasonable cost?

It could be the clutch or the gearbox. It can be repaired, but top loaders are old dinosaurs these days. Front loaders are as big or bigger, and more efficient and cost a fraction of the cost to run in water and electricity for heating that water.

Series 70 is just that, a series. A model number will give you the cost of spares and how many have been discontinued?

My washing machine will fill but it will not agitate or spin. It makes a looud humming noise like it is trying to work. It is a Kenmore 70 series Model # 20702

Possible that the motor is faulty or is stuck and makes the noise. it will be good to remove and check the motor after disconnecting the power cord. Also it is possible that the CAPACITOR is faulty and so the motor HUMS. Please check this out.
Please check if the belt or the drive is struck and so the motor is jammed.

Kenmore Series 70 washing machine whines and low flow on cold H2O

Yeah you need to replace the water valve. To get to it you need to remove the cabinet on the newer direct drive models, If yours has a rear access panel then you simply pop the top to get to the valve after removing the hoses. Fairly simple job. Here is a good website for direct drive coupling replacement . It shows you how to open the cabinet. http://repair2000.com/coupling.html
GVI 151 is the generic part that fix all belt drive models. Direct drive will need its own little water valve buy hay it ain't but 20 bucks.
For a better explanation post you model number in the comment box and I will research it further for you amigo.

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

When this machine is not spinning, the water should still be able to drain, as the motor drives the pump on the same shaft as the coupler for the tranny. Set to the spin setting and depress the lid switch, if the water still does not drain, you may have something stuck in your pump, which would also lock the motor shaft and not allow it to spin or agitate. If the water does drain, check the motor coupler, which is located between the motor and transmission, if broken, the motor will run but there is no drive to the transmission. Hope this helps...

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
