It seems that you don't remove the battery when you use the Notebook. This practice shortens the life of the battery because, when you use the a/c adapter and the battery, your battery is alternately charging and discharging all the time. The cells in the battery eventually die.
From what you describe, it sounds like the power strip inside the Notebook (where you plug in the adapter cord) has been damaged and needs to be replaced.
Your computer is not a total loss. Just have that power strip and the battery replaced and your Notebook should be up and running again.
And, in the future, if you just remove the battery when your kid uses the computer, or if you are going to be using it for over 1 hour. Save the battery to use when you need the mobility.

- Hi,
I'm very glad you got it going. The nice thing about laptops is that many of the repairs are easy to do, so don't be too frightened about maybe needing to replace the internal power strip if it comes to that.
I really hope that all you need to do is replace the battery. Good luck!
