Problem for Gateway MX6448 PC Notebook

MX6448 won't boot; black screen.

I've had my MX6448 for five years. My kid uses it every day, always with the power supply plugged in, not on battery power. The battery is the original; it's never been replaced. Today my kid used the notebook for several hours. He generally does not power off after use, but lets the thing go into Standby. I returned to it several hours later to find a black screen, with the front left blue light on (Battery?) . I tried turning it off/on, using the usual button at the top right of the keyboard, but all I got was the right front blue light (HD?)turning on for a few seconds. It then went off. The Battery LED remained blue. A geeky mousepad displayed its startup colors for a few seconds. The red LED on the optical mouse pulsed. The screen remained black. Nothing else happened. I tried pulling out the power supply plug and waiting. When I did that the Battery light went black. When I put the power supply plug back in, the Battery light went magenta, then blue after about a minute. But startup still failed. Any advice?

- Just after I originally posted my questionm the notebook came back to life, so I didn't check the comments here. But the problem happened again, so I came here to see if anyone had originally responded. I was not aware of the need to remove the battery pack, and had never done so! When I took it out I was immediately able to reboot using only the a/c adapter. I am hoping that all I need is a new battery, and don't have to replace the power strip as well. I'll see how things go. Thanks for your advice!

It seems that you don't remove the battery when you use the Notebook. This practice shortens the life of the battery because, when you use the a/c adapter and the battery, your battery is alternately charging and discharging all the time. The cells in the battery eventually die.

From what you describe, it sounds like the power strip inside the Notebook (where you plug in the adapter cord) has been damaged and needs to be replaced.

Your computer is not a total loss. Just have that power strip and the battery replaced and your Notebook should be up and running again.

And, in the future, if you just remove the battery when your kid uses the computer, or if you are going to be using it for over 1 hour. Save the battery to use when you need the mobility.

- Hi,
I'm very glad you got it going. The nice thing about laptops is that many of the repairs are easy to do, so don't be too frightened about maybe needing to replace the internal power strip if it comes to that.

I really hope that all you need to do is replace the battery. Good luck!
