VHS won't play

I can play DVD's but it won't play VHS. I'm using component out cords going directly to the TV. I've made sure that VHS is selected on the DVD player but my TV still just shows the SAMSUNG welcome screen. What could I be doing wrong?

If it's showing a welcome screen, the DVD is on. The VHS won't show a welcome screen. Some machines are a little tricky because they want to start in the DVD mode. I would concentrate in that area.
