check you bios pages are correctly configured,,goto bios navigate with "tab" and arrow keys,,play around untill you know these pages dont change anything untill you are sure you know what you are doing..Exit and save pay attention to boot sequence if this is set up wrong it might cause failure in the way you describe, the instructions on the right hand side of the bios pages should help you---good luck --Davey
If you can boot into Windows, click on start and then open your control panel. Then click on recovery. Then click on advance recovery and select return computer to factory conditions. Answer any question and the system should reboot. Answer a few more questions and then it should go on autopilot and reset your system back to factory conditions. This should take one or two hours. It is best to check on it to make sure everything is going fine. If your resetting a lappy, make sure you have the AC adapter plugged up. You do not want this process interrupted.
If you can not boot into Windows then try Advanced boot options. When you press the power button, start tapping the F8 key. You will see the advance boot menu. Select repair your computer. Select your language and then enter your user name and password. The click on Dell factory Image Restore and next. Answer the question and it should start the recovery back to factory settings.
If all else fails try recovery from the recovery partition
When you press the power button start tapping the F12 key for your puter and the BIOS menu will open. Select recovery from the menu, answer the question and the recovery should begin. Depending on your puter this will take one to two hours.
Your BIOS menu should look something like this. Yours might be different. I am posting this to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Hi, This might be an issue with the Hard drive or the operating system installed on the hard drive. Try to access BIOS screen tapping on F10 on restart. If you are able to access Bios try to run the Short smart self test on the Hard drive. To run the test follow the steps as follows: on the main window you will see 1 st drive 2nd drive 3rd drive 4th drive. besides these drive letters you will find your Hard drive listed. Highlight that and press enter. on the next screen highlight Smart support and press enter. on the next screen select Short smart self test and run the test. If it gives an error code that means the hard drive has gone bad. 2)If not then come back on the main page by clicking on ESC button till you come back to the main page.then Press F5 select yes to load set up defaults and press enter.Press F10 once to save configuration changes and press enter. It will boot to windows. 3)Still if you face the same issue then you need to perform the recovery using the recovery cds. 4)If you don't have the recovery cds then you can contact HP support and order the cds and perform the recovery. This should resolve your issue. Thanks.
If you have your original Windows install disk, you can boot off of that, and should be able to recover most of your files, assuming your drive has not died fully. Depending on how important your files are, you can send the drive to a drive recovery service. I did that a couple years ago, they were able to recover all my files but it was EXPENSIVE. $1200.
