Please ensure that the clothes are distributed evenly before using another mode to wash your clothes. It might be that there is an issue with only one of your washing modes. If other modes do not show the issue, then I would turn your washer dial counterclockwise by 180 degrees before attempting the first mode again.
Sounds like the switch that tells the controller that the door is closed and locked is actually bad or the plastic molded part holding the switch is broken. Inspect the interface for cracks.
You need to replace the door lock mechansim. Fairly easy to do yourself, just pull the spring strap off the rubber door gasket and remove 2 screws holding door lock. Install new door lock and re-install door gasket and spring strap, and WALLA! she works:)
Try unplugging for 30 minutes, then try to start again. If this doesn't work you probably have a contol board or door lock problem. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

Kenmore washers with the pre code of 110 are Whirlpool products. Many years ago (1986) the new design was elimination of the lint filter. The only way to lessen the effect is to wash linty clothes together and not to overload. While the machine is washing lift the lid and watch the clothes. If they are circulating (appears and disappears)from top to bottom ands remaining in the same general location you are good. If the same item is staying visable all the time and the clothes are just wiggling a little you have too much in there. (I repaired these for 21 years) Eric
Door lock switch # 131763245 if everything else is working fine this should fix the problem. It shorts out between the motor control board and the door lock from emptying the cycle and spinning. Try running your machine on drain/spin and see if it drains and tosses clothes and then stops with no spin. If that happens then it is your door lock.switch. Easy to replace by yourself and costs $65.00
Doesn't your unit have a lock light in addition to an on light? On mine when you start the machine a red light comes on, then after a minute or two the lock light above it comes on. Once the lock light lights, the machine shouldn't stop. If only the initial light comes on, the door isn't locking. As a result, as the drum moves the clothes and they push against the unlocked door, it turns the machine off. You might need to check/tighten the door latch. Also check the door wax motor/door lock assembly.
It sound like a lid switch issue.
If the lid switch is defective, your washer can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washer to get to the switch.
Look that the switch is not broken or loose.
If all is fine, you should replace the switch.
Good luck!
