Question about Hitachi 50EX20B 50" Rear Projection Television
Our neighbor just upgraded to an LCD TV and gave us their used Hitachi 50EX20B projection TV. After moving it into our home, it worked for one day then just quit. When I press the on button, just get a little click, but no picture. I know it's not the power, since other appliances work fine from that outlet. When I asked the neigbor about it, they mentioned it was going on and off by itself for a while, but would always come back on once they hit the power button. I opened the unit and cleaned it up a bit - I think there was 10 years of dust inside, but the unit still does not come on. I can see a couple of green lights flickering, and a couple of red lights come on and stay on, but no picture. When I "turn off" the power, the red lights go off.
Is this something I can fix? Since it's a free TV, willing to put something into it, but only if it is worthwhile...
I actually ended up with this set. It turned out to be a very nasty short circuit on the audio board. To trouble shoot disconnect PSD5 to isolate the power supply. It's the 3rd connector from the back on the left side of the power supply. If you turn on the tv and now see 5 green leds and the one red led, look for a short outside of the power supply. The short on this set was on the left side of the audio board (which is to the left of the power supply) There was a wire add and a part add covered in wax. The bare wire was touching a ground but you have to remove the wax to see it. Since this may be a change that was made to all sets of this model, it may be a common failure. Good Luck all.

Tips for a great answer:
The only repair for any of these symptoms is replacing the Engine Assembly.
To prevent the overheating caused by clogging of the bottom filter, upgrade to the new style bottom filter. Upgrade to New Style bottom Filter
