How to remove Platter on JVC L-A120 Turntable

Hi Jeff...
The platter on the JVC LA-10 does not come off as most turntable platters do. It is attached to the spindle with a Philips head screw.

Here are the steps:
Remove dust cover from turntable. Unscrew hinges and lift.

  • Turn the turntable on its side and remove screws that hold the top to its base. Remove platter by unscrewing the bottom plate from the turntable. The spindle bearing is held in place with a Philips head screw. Loosen it and the platter will separate easily from the spindle.

  • Loop replacement band around the pulley cylinder in the motor. Replace platter and bottom plate. Tighten spindle screw. Test the new belt by turning the platter clockwise two or three rotations. Belt should fit snugly and turn with little resistance.

First see if you can manually turn the shaft by hand. If it freely turns then it will be a power issue. If it doesn't the motor might have seized up. Some oil should correct it.
If it's a power issue you should look around for bent or broken switches.
If the motor to the deck operates under 12 volts. You can connect a 9 volt battery to it. If that doesn't turn it the motor is faulty.

Pitch is off--too slow before, now too fast.

The speed is set by a synchronous motor that drives the turn table. There may be a small adjustable resistor (pot) that will do the trick.

There are all sorts of screwdriver bits you can get that will slacken the screws. If you don't get the right one it won't turn. To be honest I would look at a new motor, unless you already have a found it to be expensive.
