E74 is a problem with the A/V cable. Check to make sure it is connected to the tv correctly. Unplug all the peripherals (hard drives, coolers (if you have one), controllers etc). Unplug and reseat the A/V cable into the xbox and try again. Next try another A/V cable and if that don't work it is a problem with the scaler chip (A/V chip in the 360). If you just bought it return it to the store for a replacement.

My Xbox 360 has a similar E74 error. It can mean a lot of different things, but it's usually a hard drive issue. If you're lucky, that's what it will be for you too. Follow these steps for a possible fix:
With everything plugged in and ready to go, remove the video cable from your Xbox 360.
Turn your Xbox 360 on. It should start flashing red lights indicating that there's a video problem.
Count slowly to 10. After 10 seconds, plug the video cable back in.
Cross your fingers.
If this works, all you should have to do is follow this process every single time you turn your 360 on. It's a bummer, but it happens when parts age. If this doesn't work, try removing your hard drive completely (assuming you can). If that's all that will fix it, you'll need a new Xbox 360 hard drive... this could however still be covered by warranty if you're lucky!
Having the e-74 code is when the video chip on the 360 over heats and becomes un soldered your best bet is to turn the 360 on with a towel over it and wait for 3 red lights the call microsoft and tell them the 3 lights issue dont mention the 1 light or it will cost you dearly around 150$
Try using a new AV lead as that could be at fault. check the pins inside the AV plug and socket on the back of the xbox 360 console to make sure there are no bent pins. if all that fails the video controller chip on the PCB will need to be resoldered or replaced, i think microsoft can fix this under their 3 year extended guarantee.
What is the error code at the bottom of the screen & check for flashing red lights on the power button if 3 illuminate it the infamous RROD(Red Ring of Death-google it) which you will get a free repair for if its the bottom right quadrant flashing red then its most probably E74 or E61. E61 is a hard drive related problem so try playing without it, & E74 is the AV cable snapped inside or the GPU/CPU inside the xbox 360 has weak solders on it, I suggest MS support ASAP.
E74 is NOT caused by a bad AV cable, it is NOT caused by the ANA/HANA scaler chip. It is the solder points on the GPU that have cracked. You must use a heat gun and do the XCLAMP to fix it. Shops normally charge $75-100 to fix that.
E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU.
Try the cable swap if that works then great buy yourself a new cable and bam your set if that doesnt work then you need to contact MS or use a replacement plan. cuz your GPU is fried.
