These trucks have corrosion issues in the wiring connections as they age. I would start at the left fenderwell and unplug the starter relay and check those plug contacts first. When my 1992 150 did this, I ended up unhooking and cleaning all the plug in connections on that side of the truck, including the computers. I added di-electric grease to the terminals as well. The problem has not come back. You did not say if the truck restarts hard or not. The ignition pick up inside the distributor may also be a problem, but those normally will just stop working all at once.
Check under the hood the fuse box with the feed from the battery gets corroded and works intermittently clean main wires going in and replace the screws holding the wires 1/2 to 3/4 inch ones for better contact
I'm going to guess TIMING BELT. Fairly common with this engine. Thankfully, they are a "NON-interference" motor so it didn't do any damage when the belt snapped. Just need to replace it. Should cost around $300-$400 depending on where you are. Good luck!
Had a mitsubishi do that too. ECM was out of it. I think you can have the module tested, but if not, they aren't that much to try one, could still be it. They usually only give you problems when they get hot. As for your computer, it's behind the glove box. Take out the glove box, your computer is in a white plastic box with a bunch of wires running into it. When I looked into one at autozone for my 93 K1500 with the same engine, I think they were like 100 bucks.
my mx6 died on me one day, same thing it would keep cranking but would not fire and start towed to a garage spark tested.NO spark changed distributor and problem fixed
could be distributor. remove cap and rotor and slotted wheel. look for brown dust covering optical sensor from bad bearing. If yes, replace distributor. It triggers spark and fuel injection.
