Question about Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS Receiver

1 Answer

General confusion with plethora of maps etc

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60csx which appears to be a fantastic bit of kit.
Some basic questions : a. the box says "with sensors and maps" I cant find any maps of the UK - it is probably me but - where are the maps? b. I wish to be able to walk/cycle around and see from the GPS exactly where I am - rather than preloading a route etc. Which is the best way to do that ? because the topo DVD is too big to fit on the microSD card or internal memory, so will I need to buy pre-loaded Micro SD's ? or can I load an area into the GPS and if so, how
Thanks a lot

If you have a copy of mapsource read the help file

"Transferring and saving mapsource data"

if the data will not on your (micro)SD card use a bigger one

How and what steps to install a more detailed map of USA to Garmin GPS Map60CSx?

To get more detailed mapping for 60CSx the easiest way is just to purchase them on a pre-loaded microSD card. You can also buy mapping on DVD but this requires you to load your own SD and is a little bit more work, but this would give you the ability to view them on your PC and create custom routes. All these items can be obtained from or

Hope this helps!

How to Transfer Maps to GPSmap 60csx

You have use the unlock wizard to install the key that is provided with the software. When I bought my Mapsource CitySelect, it came with two keys. The way Garmin does it is, you can install the software as many times as you want on as many machines as you want, but can transfer the maps, data, etc ONLY to unlocked devices. Last I checked Garmin wanted $75 for additional unlocks. Some data is not locked, like Topo maps and some tide points since this data is obtained (by Garmin) from the gov't, which is free for us (wel, minus taxes we pay). Contact Garmin support, they are very attentive.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx

I think all the Garmins allow to do is generate a waypoint list on your PC and upload THAT to the GPS, according to what Garmin told me about my Streetpilot C340. You also need Mapsource on the PC.

How to Transfer Maps to GPSmap 60csx

Have you highlighted the section with the map select tool, then hit the Transfer to GPS button? If you do, what happens then? Does it freeze?

If you are able to send routes and waypoints to the unit, you should be able to send selected unlocked maps as well.

How do I get my Garmin GPSMap 60Csx to work with C-map software

Try posting the problem listing your virtual port software or the laptop itself as the product, you may get many more experts taking a look. Other than that, one thing to try would be to set it up on a machine with a serial port, and if you can get it working see what all the settings are - it may give you some clues. I used to use C-map years ago, so probably now much different, but we often had unrecognised port problems that usually meant two or three restarts before it would pick up the port (this was without changing any settings). Maybe they cured this in the last few years, but the best answer I got back then for why it happened was bad software code in c-map, never bothered to try the later versions. Hope this helps a bit :)
