- Cheers for the reply,
I have done all the obvious re-installing software trying new ink cartridges, the printer does recognise the fact that I have removed them prior to reinstallation cartridge light indicators all light up, the ribbon cables seem in good and clean condition along with belts etc. Just seem to be at a loss or is the printer getting close to retirement,
Please advise,
Regards
Rich

- Apologies however as I said the obvious has been checked I believe that the problem lies within the printers software is there a way of totally resetting the printer back to default and totally rebooting the printer.
Cheers
Rich

- No really apologies I did not mean any negative response to you I appreciate your help in this matter. Is just a frustrating issue, I know you said that its not an expensive printer but £500 is a lot to me,
Sorry for misunderstanding.

Check that your printer head is not jammed or move freely.
For that put oil in head carrier .
Also clean dust from head contact with carrier .
Let me know if you need more assistance.
Thanks.

If the printer is turning off completely, then the printer is faulty.
Try a basic troubleshooting by replacing cartridges, and power cycling the printer.
You should also try reinstalling software , that may not fix the problem , but will exclude driver software as possible cause.
The only basic maintenance you can do on hardware is cleaning the encoder strip. The encoder strip is the plastic strip located near to the traction belt. This part determines the position of the carriage, when it is dirty or faulty you can get the problem you described.
Also, after removing cartridge turn printer upside down and shake it gently to find foreign objects stuck inside the printer.
Often this kind of problems are caused by faulty parts, like return motor , encoder strip or traction belt or an internal fault like a short or a lose connector. The printer will park the heads on one side because it detects it cannot work.

- If it is shutting down completely, then there is a fault. The fault can be a bad contact, or a mechanical problem. When printer shuts down it is not just mechanical, some electric or electronic problem is there.
As I said you can try general troubleshooting, and have a look inside the printer for contacts or lose connector. You can also check traction belt, encoder strip or ink carriage contacts. If you are lucky you can spot a fault like a broken encoder strip, a foreign object, or a bad connector to ink carriage contacts.
If there is nothing at a glance, this printer is not an expensive model, and may be not worth repairing. In that case replacement may be the best option.

- Software is fixed reinstalling drivers.
I fix printers, and I have never seen a printer shutting down (no light) because of an incorrect driver.
Reinstall drivers from Epson website, disconnect and reconnect power cord. This printer has no nvram, and those operation reset software completely.
I am pretty sure that this won't work.
Printer is almost 100% faulty, if all proposed did not work , replace it.
After voting negatively I will be excluded from your problem. For the future, you are not using Fixya in the right way, when you rate solution you either exclude expert or close the problem.
Bye and good luck.

I just installed a CIS. When the printer is turned on,the carrier that holds the ink cartridges moves left and right a few times. Then the carrier and the chrome bar drop down and the belt makes a lot of noise and the carrier does not move at all. ..then the system shuts off. I removed the CIS and installed the original cartridges but have the same problem. The belt makes a lot of noise until it shuts down.
Thanks for your help.
