If the error is the inability to properly record or copy a file, the problem is most likely a bad memory chip. If the system cannot write to a specific address in proper sequence, then it will not detect a bad chip, but will give an error when recording. Chance are, the MB will not cause that kind of problem. Also, if you can borrow an XP or Vista (whichever you're running) system disk, try to do a slow format of the hard drive to make sure it's not bad. Most restore disks use a quick format routine to set up the disk. Finally, if your system is more than 2 years old, I suggest you try replacing the DVD or CD drive. Also, a good cleaning to remove dust and such is a good idea, but most likely the problem is the computer memory chip.

The drive on this PC got corrupted. I formatted it and tried to reinstall windows xp. Got all sorts of unable to copy file so-and-so during setup. Put in another drive....same messages.... put in another cd-rom...same messages.... The majority of setup files are copied ok to the hard drive but because of the missing files it could NOT copy the entire installation eventually crashes!!! :-( put in HP's own recovery disks....same messages....and eventually crashes.
