Can't connect to Linksys WRT54G when security is enabled

I'm trying to help my parents configure their wireless router. I came home for Christmas and found that their home network was named "linksys" and was not secured. Needless to say... i'm trying to change this.

The problem I'm running into is that when I try to enable security, I'm no longer able to connect. I can connect just fine when security is disabled.

I've tried both WPA Personal and just WEP. Neither allows me to connect. WPA Personal will just stop trying to connect after it times out. WEP will show me as "Connected", but I never get an IP address from the router.

I don't think it's my laptop since I have the same router & configuration at home, and i have no problems.

Any suggestions of what to try or look at? I've tried re-setting the router and rebooting the computers, but nothing seems to have worked.

Re: Can't connect to Linksys WRT54G when security is...

Please make sure that the type of the security on the router should match on the computer as well. Also make sure the SSID on your router is the same in as your computer.
If this does not work, make another profile onto your computer, or simply click on the wireless icon and it should ask you for the security pass, put in the pass and you should be in.
At the moment I would strongly recommend to make another profile on your laptop, right click on the wireless icon, properties, wireless networks, make sure that the use windows to configure is checked and under prefered networks add the profile of the existing router with same SSID and security you are trying to use.
Let me know!

I accidentally reset my wireless G WRT54g router, how can restore it?

Not unless you made a backup configuration file. So unfortunately you will need to reconfigure your wireless router. The main points you should configure are...
  • Change the default password to login to your router configuration
  • Change the SSID (optional)
  • Enable wireless security WPA2 / PSK (keep out unauthorized users)
You can configure it manually or download the utility from Linksys / Cisco website which will walk you through the configuration.
Comment back if you need help configuring it.

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router Issue Allows 1 Computer at a time

Your router my not be DCHP enabled or it might not be assigning the IP addresses either.

I would do a reset and start all over with your security settings and see if that works. Worst case scenario you could always turn security off when your parents or others are there.

If you do not have wireless security enabled then anyone within the range of the radio transmitter will be able to use your internet access.

A G band router has about a maximum range of 300 feet which is greatly reduced by walls, wiring and other items in your home.

If your using a wireless laptop you can do a site survey by walking around outside your home to get an idea of the range your router has.
