Usually its the ''neon'' light that break. Use a flashlight to dbl check that you can see the display on the lcd.

The display panel can go low emission due to age, but I doubt it will need a new one. There are 2 electrolytic capacitors that need changing in the grid drive voltage circuit- not really a DIY job, but not that difficult for anyone knowledgeable with a soldering iron.
