The system starts with reading the Ram size & a dash keeps on flashing from then on. It does not allow me to enter setup(F10). Once pressed F10 on the screen it is displayed setup. The steps I have already taken:
    1. Cleared CMOS.
    2. Changed CD-Rom & placed a HDD with Windows 2000 already loaded in it. Therefore placed back the originally placed HDD & CD-Rom.
    3. Changed to the specified PC133 SD-RAM (64MB) but it beeps as if the Ram is bad when it is not it works fine in other machines. Therefore placed back the originally placed SD-Ram i.e. 512MB.
    4. Removed CPU power leads from HDD, FDD, & CD-Rom & tried to enter setup but still could not go through.
    5. Changed Processor & tried but still the same result. i.e. cannot enter setup. Therefore placed back the originally placed processor.
    6. Took out CMOS Battery placed it after 3 hours. Same result cannot enter setup.
NOTE: Whenever the machine starts it starts from reading the ram size.

If your computer is running kind of sluggish, you can fix it with an easy clean up of your registry. Here's a link to a free scan that works well:
www.your-free-info.com/RegCure
I've used this one and it sped up my computer by quite a bit. Hopefully this helps.

Second part of question.... No. Unless you've made a copy you will probably have to buy another OS cd.

Too bad, so sad.

If you have a virus, especially more than one, you will have to do a fresh install. Yes, wipe everything off your computer, format the hard drive and start again.

Please remember to take some time and get everything off the computer that you need to keep. Everytime I do a fresh install I forget to store my emails and email addresses, some of which are quite important.

Place your windows cd in the cd drive and boot the cd, follow the prompts to do a complete fresh install.

Have you ever done a fresh install? If not, you may need someone with a little knowledge to take you through the process.

My compaq presario cq56 will not restore itself to factory default settings

U have a nasty bug in there. Your best bet is using another computer download the latest malwarebytes program onto a usb stick. Using the hiren disk boot up to the fake desktop, navigate to the usb stick via explorer and run the program and get the latest updates for it at same time. Then run it and clean out the crud that is in the machine causing havoc. When you reboot go back into the program and permanently remove the deleted items that are in the quarantine area.
