USB will not recognize devices

Running XP Home - SP2 on Dell 4550. SP2 update was done some time ago. Lately computer is not recognizing USB devices. Ipod, digital cameras, external hard drives.(USB Device has malfunctioned) I've tried plugging into alternate USBs, (No hubs) to no avail. Surprisingly there has been no problem with USB mouse or keyboard.

One suggestion that I tried was a complete shut down and removal from power for a few hours, but it did not have any effect. Please help. Thanks

Hi Nit_3,

Check out the site, http://www.oreilly.com/pub/h/3105
XP seems limited in the USB devices it can handle at any one time. If they are removed without using the remove USB devices option, they stay ghosted. Follow those instrucktion, which are not as hard as they look, and remove all the greyed devices in USB Drives, I suggest not removing anything from Non-Pug and Play, and the system devices categories. Another option is to download this program, USBDeview and it will show you the ghosted USB devices.

Nice little program! Good luck!

Usb device not recognized

If you are using Win98, that is the problem, as I think SP2 had an update to use USB, but it was iffy. See if you can download that part from Msoft. for starters. Test it on a WinXP or Vista machine, if it is not recognized, it is probably bad.

Windows XP will not recognize Garmin 200W

I had the same issue. I would plug it in and it would recognize the device then it would disappear.

What I did to solve the problem was to first turn on my Gamin 200w. After it was finished loading maps then I plugged in in to the usb port. My machine recognized the device without any problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope that helps.

USB ports don't recognize plug-ins

Latest BIOS and Chipset update would be very helpful to resolve the issue. Especially BIOS update contains very important fixes and enhanced functions. Latest release is 4/2/2007 dated. If yours older than this you can update. After BIOS update you can also update the chipset if issue persists. Here is the link for all drivers you need.
