USB will not recognize devices

Running XP Home - SP2 on Dell 4550. SP2 update was done some time ago. Lately computer is not recognizing USB devices. Ipod, digital cameras, external hard drives.(USB Device has malfunctioned) I've tried plugging into alternate USBs, (No hubs) to no avail. Surprisingly there has been no problem with USB mouse or keyboard.

One suggestion that I tried was a complete shut down and removal from power for a few hours, but it did not have any effect. Please help. Thanks

Re: USB will not recognize devices

Hi Nit_3,

Check out the site,
XP seems limited in the USB devices it can handle at any one time. If they are removed without using the remove USB devices option, they stay ghosted. Follow those instrucktion, which are not as hard as they look, and remove all the greyed devices in USB Drives, I suggest not removing anything from Non-Pug and Play, and the system devices categories. Another option is to download this program, USBDeview and it will show you the ghosted USB devices.

Nice little program! Good luck!

How do I transfer pictures from my Samsung Galaxy Tablet to my HP Windows 8 Desktop computer. Windows 8 does not recognize the device.

Music, movies, photos and more can be stored on the micro Secure Digital memory card on your Samsung Galaxy S phone. To get all those goodies on the microsSD card you need to transfer them from your computer. Connecting your Galaxy S to your computer is done with the USB cable that was included with the phone and doubles as the charging cable when plugged into the outlet adapter that also came with the phone.

Plug the large end of the micro USB cable into your computer and the small end into the USB port on the top of your Galaxy S phone. Wait for your computer to recognize the phone. If the phone is not getting recognized it could a driver problem. Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll through all of your devices or for Windows 7 click start right click on computer select properties in the left pane device manager scroll through all of your devices. If you see a yellow question / exclamation mark ? ! or a Red X you will need to update the drivers for this device right click select update driver/reinstall driver software Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours. Windows XP/Vista/7/8 This might take some time being a freeware driver solution Note: The Driver program will find all of your outdated drivers This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point. Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated. Press the "Power" button on the top right side of your phone, briefly. Unlock the phone by dragging the padlock icon to the top of the screen. Drag the notification pane down by touching the top of the screen and dragging your finger to the bottom. Touch the "USB Connected" notification and then press the "Mount" button. Your phone's microSD card will appear to your computer like an external drive. Click on the "Start" button on your computer and then click on "Computer." Double-click the drive icon that corresponds to your Galaxy S phone. This will open a folder that shows the contents of your phone's microSD card. You can copy files to and from the folder like you would any other folder on your computer. Click the "USB Device" icon in the task tray of your computer. Click "Eject USB Device." Wait until you're done transferring files before ejecting the phone from the computer. Unlock your phone and drag down the notification area. Tap the "USB Connected" notification and press "Disconnect." You can now safely unplug your phone. Hope this helps.

I install new windows and ethernet controller is not working and I can't get on the internet? What can I do?

Purchase a USB memory-stick.
On another computer with Internet access, access: and select "Downloads and Drivers". Select "Dimension". Select "4550".
Select "Network Adapters". Download the device-driver, copying it to the memory-stick.
Move the memory-stick to your computer, and "install" the device-driver.

OnBoard USB ports (both front and back) will not recognize any devices

When you reloaded the OS did you reload all the drivers? Sometimes if you do not reinstall the Intel driver the USB port will not be recognized. Happened on the last two DELL's I reloaded. Go to DELL's website and download all the drivers for your model.
Dell support website
Look up your model by service tag, it is the alphanumeric code on the barcode label on the back of your DELL and also sometimes found on either the front or top of your DELL (sometimes it is hidden beneath the USB port cover that you flip up.
Try that and see if it fixes it. Also make sure that the connector did not come loose when you opened the case.

Did you have issues before service pack 3? Roll back to SP2 if you didnt. You may need to see if there is an update that must be installed before applying SP3. Hit IBMs website and look up your model.

It is possible that the adaptor is not compatible with your version of windows vista, despite what the system requirements for the device say.

Below is a link where you can download the latest driver for your bluetooth adaptor. Support XP sp1, sp2, and vista. Try this driver
