Actually, I've had no problems with either my MDS JE520 or my MZR50 portable. Both great units, highly recommended. However, Don't try playing with the buttons on the JE520, you'll expereince some 'weird' modes. I was messing around, pressing combinations of buttons while it was off to see if it did anything. I got a shop demo thing which I couldn't get rid off (Its gone now though!?) and also, I inserted a disc after a werid combi and it said Aging on the screen. Agghh! Panic. It erased my TOC or something, when I wasn't aware of TOC cloning so I lost the recording. Don't let it put you off though, I was just curious what would happen and those combinations wouldn't happen in normal operation of the unit!

The only problem I have is that sometimes the fader, which I use whenever I record from LP's, counts down a different time than I programmed, and it doesn't pause. This happens about 1 in 20 fades.

I've had a 520 since September 10, and it shows none of the bugs that have plagued my 510s (only one of which I still own, as the other was exchanged under a lemon clause; that's how I got the 520).
The 520 so far has evinced only one tiny problem: sometimes when I delete a track and the 520 exits deletion by trying to play the track that follows, and the track after the deletion is very short (less than one second every time this has happened so far), the unit sticks at the beginning of the short track and just hangs there. Pressing PAUSE gets it out of catatonia into pause and pressing PAUSE again (or PLAY) resumes normal play.
Contrarily, I often divide tracks very near their ends, another process that leaves the unit about to try to play a very short track, and this bug never strikes on those occasions, only after deletions.
This does NOT happen in regular playback, only after deletions, and only when the next track is very short, and even then not always. Since it never occurs when the unit is unattended, it is no problem to press PAUSE twice to get out of it.

I don't know nothing about Sonys supposed bad quality, maybe it's true but I can only speak for myself, I own an old sony discman, (works like charm even though it looks kinda scratched 'cause of tough use ...) a mds-je520 MD deck (works perfectly so far, no self turn on bug or anything like that, though I haven't had it for that long time..), a mz-r50 (which has caused me some problems, though the first wasn't the units fault, there was some piece of plastic jammed inside the unit.. the other time there was a broken optical input but the warranty coverd that so what the hell.. didn't cost me a buck), and finally the sony mz-e55 ( a wonderful little unit, seems to me as it's even less sensitive than the sturdy mz-r50, which has survived being dropped to the floor w/o any protection more than one time, because the e55 doesn't have any recording capabilitys there's less that can brake I figure..

Considering we're talking about Sony, probably not. And even if the problem WAS fixed, Sony's reputation for poor quality should indicate that something else WILL go wrong. Too bad all the Japanese manufacturers are hesitiant to put their decks in the American stores....when I bought my unit, Sony was the only choice I had :-/ And of course, I have the faulty 510.
