The computer freezes no matter what application or software I am using. I can be able to access it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes then it completely freezes up. It has been re-started several times and nothing has fixed it.

My iBook freezes everytime also. Used to boot only to blue screen, removed Aircard and RAM module, now almost always boots to OSX, but locks up after a few minutes of use. Try this... boot and hold down Command+S keys, to boot into command line mode. Leave it for a while. If it eventually crashes in command line mode, you can rule out OS problems, as it will probably be hardware. That is what mine does. It does run much longer in command line mode, but will crash eventually. I hate my iBook.

Firefox will use a lot of disk space over time for temporary use. You might try starting up and run the Disk Utilities program to repair disk permissions.

The pointer jumping on the screen sounds like you may have picked up a virus. While rare, there are mac viruses. I would try to save all my data documents and any other valuable personal files or lists, then do a clean reinstall of the operating system. Then load our documents back in.
You could try to scan for a virus with a mac virus program, but not many are available for a G4 Power PC (PPC) machine.

I have recently purchased a mac ibook G4 and unfortunatly it fell of the couch.Since then i have been having problems with Safari(internet browser).Safari and the cpu will freeze as well.Everything else...

Not sure what is going on with safari but what I would suggest is reseating your RAM on your ibook, it may have come loose. to do this have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-3406L3yL0 it is fairly easy to do. You will at the same time as reseating the RAM you will have to remove the airport card and replace it in the same slot, this may sort the safari problem. Have you tried using another browser such as firefox. Hope this helps in some way.

My ibook G4 has stopped reading my external dvd drive.

If you external DVD drive connects via USB, try rebooting your iBook. (Sometimes a static shock will shut down your USB channel, and only a reboot will reset it.)
If this doesn't work, choose "About This Mac" under the Apple menu, then click on "More Info." Under Hardware, click on USB. See if the drive shows up as one of the attached USB devices. If it does not, the drive or cable may be bad.
If you have another computer available, connect your DVD drive to it. This will tell you whether the drive has failed.

Dude, if you have all the current updates for your OS and applications, then you got a logic board issue. Especially if you you keep seeing the spinning beach ball of death or the dreaded white screen of death.
The iBook G4 is the poster child for logic board defects, because it has to do with the way the circuit boards were flowed.  Apple won't fix this for the iBook G4.  You got to do a big class action lawsuit like they did with the iBook G3 before they will replace the logic board.
Best bet is to sell this thing on e-bay as a non-working unit and get you a better laptop.

Not able to install system software

Leopard is not really suited for the iBook G4.  I would recommend you go back to Tiger and see if that gets rid of your lockup.  Leopard is more suitable for the Macbook.

Is it possible to reset G4 ibook, without any disk?

hi,
Here are the steps how you can reset the user / password in your notebook.

1. Reboot
2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
mount -uw /
    • rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    • shutdown -h now
  1. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you're good to go again!

My iBook G4 continues to run slowly and/or freeze

Try resetting the PRAM by turning on the iBook then holding option + command + P + R and wait till u hear another chime. If it still freezes, it may indicate an application may be causing it to lock up hold shift after you hear the chime to boot OS X into safe boot.
