On some kenmore washers the rear is not removable.. you will have to be more specific in what machine we are dealing with...
If it is a toploader with a model # that begins with 110, the whle cabnet comes off and the rear panel is the only thing left. Kenmore frontloader, the rear panels do come off... remove the screws and voila (on frontloaders, the top will need to be removed before the rear can be removed... in most situations.)

Craftsman 5 HP MO-6436 Unit will run, pressurize, and hold pressure pretty good. But, after use has decreased pressure to the cut-off point where it should kick back on, it does not. Well, it turns...

If the unit does not unload properly the motor will have difficulty starting. Make sure that the intank check valve is not leaking air back out of tank (with pressure in tank, remove hose from compressor at tank checkvalve and spray soapy water). Replace as needed if leaking or try to repair. If the valve is not leaking then issue my be unloader valve at the pressure switch. Follow small airline from checkvalve to pressure switch. Small valve stem at the pressure switch should release air in line when pressure switch cuts off. Listen for small amount of air to be released when unit shuts off, if air continues to leak out, then check valve is leaking. Replace with generic parts making sure of fitting size. Good luck

Hotpoint WMA30 is leaking a small amount of oily water from the back of the drum when in use. There is a small hole in the back of the drum, should there be a screw in this hole that has fallen out?

Thwater is leaking because the shaft seal has worn, and the hole is supposed to be there as it is a drainage hole.
The outcome will be that the main drum bearings will eventually fail as the water will get into the drum bearings.
To replace the seal involves a complete strip down of washer. not a job to be undertaken by yourself, unless you know what you are doing.

Water leaking. A small amount of water leaks when

The usual cause of such leak is a damaged or worn drain pump. Replace it to solve the problem. It can be accessed from the back if it is a belt drive machine or from the front if it is a direct drive. Make sure to unplug the machine before servicing.

Cabinet Removal Procedure (Direct Drive machines)
Remove the console depending on the model of your machine.
  1. If the console is secured by screws, simply remove the screws, lift the console up then flip it to the back of the machine. On some models, the screws are hidden under the console's removable end caps. Pull the end caps to the front of the machine to access the screws. If the console is not held by screws, use a putty knife to release the retaining clips under the front corners of the console. Insert the putty knife blade and push it until the clips are released.
  2. Disconnect the lid switch connector from the body of the machine.
  3. The body of the machine is held on to the back panel by two retaining clips. Use a flat blade screw driver and insert it to the lip of the clip and push it to the back of the machine.
  4. Lift the lid and grab the front of the machine's body. Brace the machine's body with your knee, lift and pull it towards you to remove it. You now have the access to the drain pump.
  5. Reinstall the cabinet in reverse order of the procedure above.
For belt drive washers, remove the access panel on the back of the machine to access the drain pump.

Drain Pump Replacement Procedure

  1. Remove the spring clamps that hold the hoses to the pump. Compress the spring clamps and move it away from the pump.
  2. The pump is held on to the motor by two retaining clips. Pry the clips away to remove the pump from the motor.
  3. Remove the hoses from the pump and install the new pump in reverse order of the procedure above.

you need to remove the back to find and repair the source of the leak and fix it.  If it's new it's a warranty repair.  There aren't any packing straps.

Oil and water leak

Chances are they are not related if the water is clean. These units can run quite a while dripping small amounts of oil. The drain hose is a possibility but there are other places it can leak from. Call a local tech he can run the machine with the cabinet removed and should be able to find the source of the water leak. good luck

Tub is leaking

You could have a crack in the pump housing. Take the back panel off the machine and run a small amount of water in it, then turn on the spin cycle and see if you can see any water spraying from the pump itself. 20 yrs is not unreasonable for most older models.

Water leaking into machine

it's possible, like mine with the same problem, that one or more of the plastic feet under the water tank has broken, then making the tank move and upsetting the valve underneath. My one always leaks clean water, never dirty and I have a broken foot.
