Not recognizing password

For the last two years I have been entering my password. Just recently, the external drive will not recognize my password. Is this a common occurrence? Is there any way to recover the information. I hav family pictures that are obviously irreplaceable. Help!!!

I use Windows XP for my operating system, but I believe I entered the password through the installation software, Maxtor One Touch II. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Happy New Year. SObelsky

I downloaded the software; however, as I began to install it there was a warning indicating I would lose my data but open the drive. It is the data that is of paramount importance the drive itself has no value at this point.

    thanks for your continued effort

Locked out, boot password

I recently had a similar problem. I could no longer access my external hard drive and was unable to take admin permission of the drive. I wanted to get my files off the drive before I formatted it, especially five years worth of photographs. The solution was simple. I downloaded and burned Ubuntu (Linux) onto a bootable cd and ran Linux on my computer. Linux doesnt recognize Windows Admin privalges. I was easily able to access my external harddrive and copy my files onto my desktop. I restarted my computer with Windows and re-formatted my hardrive. The last step was simply to cut and paste my files back into my external drive. Everything works perfectly after I formatted the drive and I was able to keep my files.

External Hard Drive isn't recognized on new Vista Computer

here are several possibilities
Bad Cable - Well it is probably unlikely, but I would first try another USB cable just to make sure the cable is not damaged.
2. Power Supply - Try another power supply if you have or can borrow one
3. Controller Failed – The Controller inside it has failed.
4.Drive Failure – The Hard Disk inside has failed. Drives typically have an average 5 year lifespan, some last longer and some can fail much sooner. Unfortunately, you rarely have any warning, thus the need for backups.

WD Passport 250GB External cannot be recognized.

Go to BIOS (Press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS). Check if the Power state is in S1. Ensure that USB setting is in Hi-Speed.
Restart the computer and try using the device. this should fix. Let us know the result.
