I use PowerMax software. It contains programs to wipe the drive clean (I use it for my used drives), format the drive and set partitions.

It has many other functions which you might find useful.

My copy is pretty old, but it works great. I obtained it free from Maxtor, however, Seagate now owns Maxtor and offers the same utility package on their website for free download. The utility works for all brands of HD's.

What you will do is download the utility package to your computer, follow instructions to make a bootable CD with the utilities on it.
Then, you connect your HD to your PC, boot from CD and follow the instructions on the screen.

Trying to upgrade my hard drive to 250gb. PS3 will not recognise new hard drive even after I format it to FAT32 on a computer. When I put new hard drive into the PS3 it tells me to format hard drive and if...

If your PS3 is telling you to format your hard drive, then it is recognizing it. You have to reformat the hard drive using the PS3, not your computer. If you don't have the option of formatting your hard drive then you may have to download an update from Sony and then run that disc to format the hard drive. Some of the updates will completely erase all saves, downloads, & etc when done from a disc. So be sure to use this with your new hard drive in the PS3, just to be sure not to lose all your stuff on your old hard drive. Sony has a "walk-thru" on these things on their website.

Just installed new hard drive and it will not let me format or partition

Try one more new hard drive in the system and make sure the cables are nice and snug and connected.

If you can't format another new hard drive then that means its a problem with the main board. If you can format another new hard drive then that means the original new hard drive is bad from the box.

I have a corrupted file on my ps3 and it trys to repair it self after 30 seconds.it goes right back to the same screen. HELP!!!

Your problem may be more widespread than just that one file. The file system on your hard drive may be corrupt. You can try to reformat the entire hard drive in an attempt to remove all the errors in the PS3 data, or you can buy a new hard drive. You may have to replace the hard drive if the hard drive is failing, and therefore not reading or writing data properly.

To reformat the drive, in the PS3 menu:
NOTE: This will erase everything you saved on the hard drive.

1) Go to the Settings menu, then select System Settings.
2) Select Format Utility, then select Format Hard Disk.
3) Select Quick Format

To replace the Hard Drive, buy any 2.5 inch notebook hard drive that has a serial ATA connection. Then remove the old hard drive from the left side of the PS3 and install the new hard drive.

After installing the new Hard Drive you will need to format the drive. When you turn on the PS3, you will see onscreen instructions to help you with this.

How do you format the hard drive?

I have set up a dozen or so if these units.... so it's fairly simple (if you understand the terminology) - By the way, I just got off the phone with Samsung tech support to confirm. John at GVI /Samsung says the drive cannot exced 160 Gig or it will not recognize it period. Secondly, the drive cannot have any format or partition whatsoever. So use a partition tool and delete the partition and the DVR will initialize it and format the drive to suit it's operating system.
I have had luck repartitioning the drives in a basic FAT 32 and making sure I did NOT set the partition as active..and the DVR configured the drive properly. Good Luck!

Hard drive installation

You need to format the drive first before you can use it. If you are using windows xp, right click on the drive E and then click on Format. You can put a check mark on the box next to quick format if you like it faster and then click on start.

Please leave me a comment after you did what I said.
