Sony MDS-E12 Mini Disc Player

SPDIF to RME9652

By Gary10 - usenet poster

I've been using a 9652 (24 ch ADAT optical + SPDIF) for a couple years,
mostly with Nuendo.  Windows based, been through a couple OS changes, now
on XP, never had a problem.  I'm using the ADAT light channels to a Nuendo
8IO, and have the wordclock cables going there, also (two-way).  I just got
a Sony MDS-E12 that I want to use to dump a weekly set of MD's we get for a
radio show.  One of the goals of the MD was the SPDIF I/O it had.  So,
silly me, I run a (da*n expensive) digital cable from the Sony out to the
SPDIF pigtail in on the RME and get - nothing.  Nuendo is unable to open
the device, and (obviously) enabling those channels as inputs shows no
signal.

Has anyone done this?  is it a problem to use both ADAT and SPDIF on these
cards, when they are going to different devices?  Is there some clock
setting I should change when not using the ADAT I/O?  Do I need a two-way
connection between the Sony and the RME?

Thanks,
Greg

Thanks - I think I'm down to hardware problems.  I found the contact for
RME's tech support, and they've been really great.  Beyond lots of
suggestions of things to test, he sent a little app to monitor any of the
ports on the card, which gets Nuendo out of the way.  I can send a spdif
signal to anything in the studio (I found the Roland we use for remotes
has spdif) out from the 9652.  I can send a signal into anything *except*
the 9652 (i.e. Roland to Sony MD, Sony MD to Roland, but neither of them
to 9652.  Unless they've set a different differential between input and
output, well, thing sick.  thing broke.  need fix.  :)

Off to the races.  At least analog works.  I like analog.

Thanks,
Greg

I'm guessing the cap goes in the center as opposed to the shield?  It's
certainly worth a shot, and cheaper than a new card :).

I tried a loopback test, and that failed, too.  9652's output connected
to its own input.  Their little monitor app saw signal going out, but
nothing coming in.  I'm such an idiot.  I should have done that first.

What makes some RCA cables digital, others analog?  I pulled their
pigtail apart, and saw absolutely nothing special. Monster's digital
cable talks about all the special braiding (snort) they did to justify
the cost of the cable, but the pigtail into the 9652 looks just like any
other RCA cable, with the ends soldered to a couple pins. (Continuity was
fine, BTW).

My favorite part of the Monster cable is the sticker showing signal flow
direction.  After all, if you accidentally reverse the cable,  resistance
will build, heat will be generated, and you could *melt* your entire
studio.  Boy, I sure hope they didn't accidentally put that sticker on
backwards.

Anyway, thanks again for the tip - I'll run down a 10nF cap today and see
if anything explodes.

Correct

 It's

Looks like a dead input.

PDIF = 75 Ohm Coax and analog just one or two wires and shield without
karasterictics for high frequencies

LOL! No this is only where the shield is connected.....

I guess it will not work, because the input is probebly dead.

Harrie

The 10 nf trick helped me to connect my Eventide Eclipse to the motu2408. I
think it could be the same trick probebly or the input is just dead....

There are ways spdif work, there are systemens that use differential
(-2,5/2,5 ) and (0, 5V). It could be that those are incompatible with your
machines. Prob an easy way to try if it is a problem is to use a 10 nF
capacitor in the digital signal line.

Found the "ASIO Multimedia" driver in Nuendo - yes - that's what I've
been using.  Tried "ASIO 9636/52", with no improvement, and DIGI96 with a
complete failure.

Thanks,
Greg

Umm, I'm using the most current RME 9652 driver from http://www.rme-
audio.com/english/download/drivers.htm, which I believe supports ASIO.
I'm not familiar with "ASIO Multimedia" drivers, so, I suppose they could
be in there, too :).  I have to admit, I never quite understood where
ASIO comes into play.  Are they part of the RME device driver, or are
they a virtual driver that comes with Nuendo (or something else
entirely)?

What shows up in Nuendo (1.6) device list is "VST Multitrack", and from
there I can get to all the RME channels to enable/disable them (which I,
annoyingly, can't do from the RME control panel).

Thanks,
Greg

I normally have the "Pref Sync Ref" box set to ADAT1, "Clock Mode" set to
Master in the RME settings.  "SPDIF In" is set to Coax.  I changed the
"Pref Sync Ref" to spdif.  If I take the "Clock Mode" off Master, to
either Autosync or Wordclock, I get tons 'o crackles.  Autosync finds a
sync signal on ADAT1 (presumably from the 8IO), but the second little
SPDIF in box always says "no lock".  Could the E12 be not sending a sync?
Bizarre.

In Nuendo, through Device Settings->VST Multitrack->Control Panel, I
enabled both SPDIF In and Out, moved them up the chain so they are just
behind ADAT1, and I can do a sync test on SPDIF Out, but the SPDIF in
sync test just gives me the "can not open device" error.

Again, thanks for any help.

Are you using the ASIO 96/52 driver or the ASIO Multimedia driver?

You are switching the sync source to SPDIF from external wordclock (or
internal master)? The MD player has no wordclock input so it will have to
be sync master for this to work.

Regards, Dan (who has no problem making this work on a hammerfall lite).
