Question about Kenmore Freezers
I was given a Kenmore chest freezer, model # C675-48170 OX from my mother-in-law. I know she had it in her basement unplugged and unused you years and then I put it in a storage unit for 2 more years.
I recently tried to start using it and it doesn't want to work. Could it be from being unused for so long? When I plugged it in at first I heard the compressor start, but it wouldn't get cold. The next day when I checked it the compressor was hot, with no sound at all. So, I unplugged it and tried once more, but nothing.
Do you think the compressor is shot?
Do they not like sitting unused for years?
I am not in a position to spend a lot of money on it, especially when you can get freezers at a pretty good price right now. But, also I hate to just throw it out if it could be an easy fix. It looks absolutely brand new.
Please advice if there is any hope for it that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

A chest freezer is a very simple machine. There are no fans or defrost system to cause a problem.
You need to make sure the thermostat is not turning off to soon.
If the compressor is running but it does not cool, then there is a problem with the refrigerant system.
You will want to check around with some local repair services, but about the cheapest you would have it repaired will be around $250. That is if it can be repaired at all. The majority of the refrigerant lines are inside the cabinet and unrepairable.
Post back if you have any questions.

huuum At your service!
The warranty just ran out, Sears came out told me needs a control board ($210 for just labor to replace) not sure about part price. I though a new freezer is about twice his labor and parts, so I sent him away minus $65.
I did some troubleshooting today, pull the plug for 2 days. Plug it in, temp alarm goes on all the time. Turn alarm off, left the freezer running for 4hrs.
Not cold at all, some cool air. Fan is on, compressor is on (can hear humming noise and is vibrating). Compressor is very hot to the touch, could burn finger.
Should I call Sears again, wonder how much to fix all the problem? Or just give up, look for another brand new one (not Kenmore).
Sounds like a big repair bill and multiple problems
How old is the appliance?
If the appliance is 10 years old or more you may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliance are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!
You will be fine

Yes that is the correct part number.
If a new cold control does not correct the problem. Replace the compressor start relay.

If the freezer was stored and not running for 7 years it may have lost coolant. Since the compressor is running recharging the coolant may fix the problem. Hot compressor might indicate low coolant since its motor is immersed in it.
