I assume someone has changed the finals or was trying to get more power and adjusted something they shoudln't have?

Without the proper equipment it is not possible to bias the final stage properly. Take it to someone who has a service monitor and the manual.

I don't recommend ANY changes to the output power more than 4W on AM of a stock CB radio. The output transistors can be run a bit harder, but the likely hood of them dying is much greater. Manufacturers are cheap, they aren't going to put a 20W transistor in when there are much less expensive 5W transistors. If you want more RF power, then you need to change the PA transistor for one with more power handling capability. You should look for one with more gain as well.

If it is a SSB radio that you are trying to "peak", changing the BIAS settings for the driver and PA transistors is not a good thing. The bias level sets the transistors to their optimum setting for linearity. Changing the bias will not increase your output power, but it will stress the transistors. These transistors are not exactly cheap.

I work on lots of radios and the ones where the "Golden Screwdriver" have touched usually cost 2-3 times as much to repair when they die. And they will die.

My cobra 1000 gtl cb radio keeps blowing finals

Check bias and check your SWR. Also make sure your coax is not excessively leaky, and also check the loading coil inside the antenna to make sure the coil connections have not become all corroded and that their connections are sound.

I have a galaxy 44v that recieves keys up but know watts come out i have put new finals new voltage regulators b754 and the one in front of it changed the 300v redish " dog tic" thats what we...

  • The Galaxy 44 has 1 final and 1 voltage regulator not "finals." I doubt it is putting nothing out although it may look like it on a watt meter. Check VR16 (low power adjustment for the amp) and VR 13 (High power adjustment) for the amp in the radio. That radio has a variable power so make sure the pots were not turned out of whack. Check VR 14 as well. this is your AMC modulation pot adjustment.

  • Test the driver as well as the pre-driver. Check your microphone to make sure the wiring is good and the PTT is functioning.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Radio get hot when modulation bought fan seems to be staying cool

Radio most likely needs an Transmit Section alignment or has a modification in it that is causing this overheating condition. Just a guess i would say that final bias or carrier wattage/deadkey is set to high.

I changed driver final and now the radio is not keying up.Nothing appears to be burnt anywhere.

now let us ask our selves do we have a good transistor? is there proper voltage on the collector? is there proper bias and drive for the new transistor? Are there any shorts or open circuits pertaining to the new transistor?

Hopefully these questions will get you on the right path to fix the problem.

No transmit after blown final was replaced.

I tried to answer this the first time you posted :). If the finals got burned that bad I found that the bias resistor sometimes will get a burned foil and not make good connection. Also 1/10 watt sounds like the driver isn't amplifying from the buffer. Might want to check for burns on the foil all around the final stages, including where the antenna connector mounts to the board. Don't believe the caps are blown but as a last resort.... Its really hard to troubleshoot without the radio on the bench . Good luck.
