Hello,
I suspect that the screen contrast is too light to enable you to see what is displayed.
Adjust the contrast by pressing and releasing the Diamond key followed by pressing and releasing the [+] key; repeat as necessary.
If that does not solve the problem, you may want to read this artticle from the TI FAQ and Knowledge Base. Scroll down to the part on the TI89 calculator.
