Imation 8x DVD-R is the only 8x brand I can find lately. These recordable discs usually lock up at a minute and 5 seconds into recording and then flip back to zero and start over recording again. Sometimes it does this repeatedly until an "error message" pops up saying this disc is no good.
I recently only get 60% of "writing to disc" when it stops and shows "error message" and this ruins the disc.
I called Maxell and they said they no longer make 8x recordable discs.
Does Emerson/Funai offer a programming disc that will allow 16x DVD-R recordable discs to work on EWR10D4 DVD Recoreder, and will that solve these other problems?

Please be aware that a free software upgrade is now available to customers. This upgrade will enable your unit to recognize the (DVD-R 8x) discs. To obtain a copy, please call 1-800-242-7158. Customer service by phone is available 7 days a week 6:00am to 9:00pm pacific time.
In order to receive the upgrade we need to know what firmware version your unit requires. First you need to access the DVD recorders service mode. Turn on the DVD Recorder and the Television, make sure the unit is on the DVD side. You may access the service mode by pressing the CMSKIP button on the remote control. Once you press CMSKIP you must press the numbers 1,2,3. You must do this quickly so it may take a couple tries. The model name will appear on the screen followed by Firmware Version. I need to know the serial number next to FE: Press the RETURN button to exit screen.

Contact 'Emerson' which is really 'Funai' at
1-800-256-2487 complain and they will send a disc to up-grade the 'DVD' recorder to
accept the '8x' discs which are cheaper, plus Staples has some 8x disc. 50 for
$19.95 a good street price, 8x DVD-R generic Staples brand. Get the upgraded disc and go to Staples and
get the generic Staples discs. I hope this helps and good luck. Please vote appropriately and leave a message.
Jan 17, 2009 I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution. Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time. Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new discs and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.
When I bought my emerson ewr10d4 about 2-3 years ago, the machine only recorded on disks that were rated at 2x or 4x speed. And it didn't accept off-brand disks, it only liked the major brands like Maxell, TDK, Memorex, Sony. I learned this quirk the hard way. Eventually, when I called the 1-800 number, they sent me a disk to upgrade the recorder to 8x speed (and it was very simple to do - basically just pop it in). Helped a lot, although this year most disks in stores are 16x speed, and as of a couple months ago (November 2008) emerson didn't have a newer up-to-date upgrade available. But if you didn't do the 8x upgrade yet, call them and start there. It's a small improvement, but an improvement nonetheless. By the way, if anyone wants to buy some lesser-known chinese and japanese-brand disks, I may be able to help!
emerson dont have cotex u need buy samsung emerosn worse brand to play new dvds ok just wont read them right its dvd it self players cotex not up to par to read newer dvds samsung makes best 1080 p upconverting one 79 at circiut city i seeen thzx inck
The disc must be DVD-R with an R4.7 under the logo and they MUST be 4X or 8X specific .... the cannot be 1X to 8X or 1X to 16X or note up to 16X .... the disc box must state 4X or 8X ONLY .... and yes they are hard to find for sure.....
The problem is likely that you are using 8x/2x media. Though the booklet does not say it, the burner does not support anything above 4x for DVD-R and 1x for DVD-RW. Calling their tech support can (possibly) get an update for this problem. Otherwise, the burner cannot use anything but outdated media.
