Almost all current Androids are the same for updates. From the main screen go into Settings > Software Update. You should see a screen that gives you the phone's current software version and a button for checking for updates. If you select About Phone from the Settings screen you should see options for the hardware itself including the kernal and hardware version.
Most manufacturer's have the phones by default periodically checking for and applying updates - including the phone's firmware, so you usually don't have to worry about it.
