It says I only have 16 songs on it

I have moved about 40 songs from itunes to my mp3 on the computer, but when I unplug it from the computer, it says it only has 16 songs on it. What do i do to get it to register all 40 songs? I have a memory chip in it too, so I know that it can hold the songs.
