Have a Brother MFC7440N fax - copy machine, replaced toner, copies are all coming out gray with horizontal lines

Uh oh. Do the prints come out the same way and the faxes? If you're lucky, it's something on the document feeder or glass. If you're not so lucky, guess what the paper passes over? Likely you may have put something in the document feeder that scored the drum. However, before you get all nervous, look at page 119 of your manual. There are instructions on cleaning the scanner glass, the ADF window, the corona wire, and the drum unit. It's a messy job :-)

Here's a manual if you can't find yours http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_MFC_7340_7345N_7440N_7840W_EN_2382.PDF

Xerox Phaser 6110 Banding Cure

As usual, my Phaser 6110N (light use, home office network duty, printed less than 2000 pages in the 4 years or so I've had it) developed a banding issue. Rather than invest in a new toner unit, I decided to take it apart and have a look at it. What I discovered is the toner feed mechanism was clogging up and not distributing toner to the imaging drum.

This is a messy job, I did it in the bathtub (dry of course!), and it's simply a case of removing the side covers from the imaging unit (I'd recommend putting the drum in a thick black plastic bag to prevent overexposure) taking care not to lose any parts, and sliding the toner feeders out of the unit. You can then remove the top cover and it will allow you to clean out the mechanism with a small dry paintbrush.

Remove just enough to de-clog the mechanism, and especially the feed conveyor at the back - this takes toner from the cartridge and feeds to the roller screws that feed the imaging drum.

If you've only got banding problems with one colour, only de-clog that particular colour. It's messy and no point wasting expensive toner! Black and red where problems for me, in both cases the conveyor mechanism was chock full of toner and there was very little in the feeder roller screws.

Re-assemble the imaging unit and run a couple of test patterns through the printer. You'll probably find that the first few pages are especially faint - when you first power up the printer from new, it fills the feed mechanisms from the toner cartridge, I haven't found a way to make it do this again (maybe someone can hack together a maintainence firmware update?). The more you emptied from the feeder, the longer it'll take to even it up. Once it's got the page mostly covered, you're back in business.

After I'd done all this, my banding problem went away! Of course, the bath was covered in toner dust and it took a while to get rid of it all!

BROTHER-MFC7430 Toner life end

actually, you dont' really need to replace your drum, your drum actually is good for 5-6 years.
you just need to clean up the drum with duster and put that back into the machine.
when reset the drum, you just need to open the front cover and press Clear buttom then 1.
after that the whole thing will be reset and ready to go for it.

Line is on paper once printed

A dark line on printed pages that are printed directly from the computer are most likely coming from the Drum Unit.
A dark line seen after making a COPY of a document using the feeder on top, is caused by a dirty scanner glass.

In the first example the fix is to replace the drum unit.

In the 2nd example you need to clean the scanner glass. The glass can be seen by lifting up the automatic feeder on top of the machine and exposing the large original glass. The document feeder glass is the smaller thin strip of glass that is located just to the left of the large glass. Clean this strip well with a cloth/paper towel and a bit of glass cleaner.
Good Luck and Thbak You for using Fixya.

I'm getting drum error message, it says move blue tab back and forth, I don't what the drum is and I don't see blue tabs

Open your document feeder cover (it pivots away from you), then open the forward top cover (it pivots towards you). Inside the machine is the drum / toner unit, remove it. On top of this assembly is the blue tab (plastic handle) either on the left or right side. Slide that tab back and forth ~ 4 or 5 times. Reinstall the drum / toner unit. Close the top cover, then the document feeder cover. Done...

Dirty prints

You have not stated if it is a laser or inkjet.
On laser machines this can usually be one/both of.
1 Faulty toner / poor quality refill (sometimes happens as toner runs low. (Replace toner)
2 Wear in the drum unit (Replace Drum unit)

Printing problems

There could be a couple reasons. One, it may be the person sending you the fax that has a problem with their machine. The easiest way to find out is, put a clean document in the feeder and make a copy. If the copy is clean then you know it is not a problem with your machine. The other possibility is that when Brother sells these new machines they only provide you with a starter drum and toner. Many times the drum may have defects and the machine does not detect these so you will not get a message telling you to replace it. If you do determine its your machine I would start by replaceing the drum unit first, then the toner.
Good luck
