The easiest way is to, making sure you have a good backup of the old drive, simply physically replace the drive, format the new drive then restore the files from the backup. Mission accomplished !

[ want to upgrade the hard drive on my Compal 30F3 99.90 motherboard

If you mean to replace the existing drive with one of larger capacity, you can "Clone" the original drive to the new one using "Clonezilla" just run the disc from switch off and follow the instructions. Or you will need a copy of your operating system disc and make sure you have a readable COA (microsoft license label) and then fit the new drive and do a new installation of the operating system. It isn't difficult as the installation tells you what to do as it runs.

What's the maximum hard drive I can install in a Compaq SR1420NX I have a 80 hard drive right now I want to install a larger one. Will this computer handle a larger Hard Drive

The BIOS has a max. hard drive size limitation. Check the manual for the maximum size the motherboard can support.
If the maximum size hard disk it can support then you can add a second hard drive in the computer as a SLAVE hard drive to double your disk space capacity.

I want to upgrade my Fujitsu MHV2040AH 40 GB Hard Drive what is the biggest/fastes one i can replace with? i though i found another one but it doesnt have the right connectors. the fujitsu/toshiba site...

Your Fujitsu MHV2040AH is an IDE 2.5" 5400 rpm 40 GB hard drive.

Most Notebooks nowadays will use 2.5" SATA hard drive which is not compatible with IDE.
New IDE are getting harder to find and are therefore in general more expensive to buy than the equivalent SATA

You should be able to update the drive with most 2.5" HDD with either 5400rpm or 7200rpm (faster) with an IDE interface. Common 2.5 IDE capacity would be 120Gb and 250Gb (320GB and 500GB are also available but could be a bit expensive). The important factors are physical size to fit in your notebook/casing and IDE interface. The BIOS support for larger drive can also be a factor but as a rule, worst case situation, a larger capacity drive can always be used at a lower capacity

Hope it helps.

I want a larger capacity drive. can i replace the mk1637gsx with a MK3265gsx?

It depends on whether the motherboard will correctly recognize the larger disk-size, but the most-likely answer is 'YES''.

Check the web-site of the manufacturer of the motherboard, to see if they have any model-specific limitations.

About SCSI

Replace the hard drive with a drive that is the same type and the same size, or larger. It will rebuild itself.

By same type I mean that the connector on the back of the drive and the speed of the drive interface must be the same. If the new drive spins at a different rate it will not create a problem, except that if it is slower it will make read/writes slower. If it is larger it will only use part of its capacity, matching the capacity of the other drives.

Note that if you were to replace all drives with larger drives (one at a time) the capacity of the entire array would be the same as the original. If you want a larger array it must be built from the start with that larger capacity.

Take out the bad drive. If you can get the exact same drive, do it, otherwise look it up on the manufacturers web site to find out size and type.

While there are a few possible RAID configurations that you could be using on that server, the chances are overwhelming that it is RAID level 5 that you are using. This RAID level is tolerant of a single drive failure. If you lose another drive before your new drive rebuilds your data will be lost. Hopefully you have a backup.

RAID 5 stripes the data and the parity data across all available drives and when a drive fails, the missing data is rebuilt on the fly from the parity data. When a replacement drive is installed the parity data is used to rebuild the data that belongs on that drive. The advantages of RAID 5 are fault tolerance (of a single drive) and speed because each drive only has to provide or write its portion of the total data being accessed or written.

Hard Drive

You can replace it with a larger one, just make sure you buy the proper hard drive. If its and IDE hard drive, buy and IDE hard drive, if its an SATA Hard drive, buy an SATA Hard drive. also make sure after you install the new hard drive that you use the operating system cd to format the drive and to install the operating system.

Why move it at all. XP needs SP3 to read hi capacity drives. I use USB external drives without any problems to increase capacity without the hassles of moving files. There are software packages that will transfer data from one hard drive to another if you must.
