YES, it will scan without the printer cartridges. I picked up a Canon MP160 for free at a yard sale this morning. It didn't come with either ink cartridge. When I powered it up, both the cartridge lights came on but it didn't display any error codes. I installed the Mac OS X scanner driver, and MP Navigator. I then used it to scan a 99-page text document into a PDF file. I have not installed the Mac OS X printer driver for it.

- Oops! Ignore my reply about scanning without cartridges. My used MP160 does have ink cartridges in it after all. If I remove either or both cartridges I get an E5 error when powering up and a "Printer maintenance is in progress. Scan after it is complete." error when trying to scan. I think my cartridges are empty (the lights are on) so you may be able to scan with empty cartridges
You can not scan if your ink is emty. You can easy recharge your cartridge. There is on marker some recharge ckits they are somthing around 10-15 euro.
