Scanner works but keypad will not - Radio Shack Pro-97 Handheld Scanner

Check to see if the keypad is 'lockedout'. If there is a 'key' icon in the display, then the keypad is locked and you will have to hold down the 'lock' key until you hear a beep and the 'key' goes away. Then you should be able to operate all the pushbuttons again. Okay?

The Motorola MC9090 can have different keypads attached. If you do change the keypad for any reason for example go from a 53 key to 43 key layout the terminals must be cold booted.


To cold boot an MC9090 running Windows Mobile 5. Partially remove the battery, hold down the On/Off button, the trigger and reinsert the battery. When the orange light on the keyboard flashes release the on/off button and the trigger.

If the on/off button or trigger is held down longer than required this occasionally causes the terminal to get caught in a warm boot cycle

If the device is still not giving the correct key output it may have a faulty keypad.

• Try pushing the #4 on the keypad. This is how you lock and unlock bands... by pushing the number on the keypad for the corresponding band.
  

It may be because your keypad is locked....Try holding down you keypad button and see if that does it.. unlock your scanner..........

if you mean the number keypad just press the number lock button and make sure the light comes on and you should be up and running again :D

Try a master reset. You will lose all of your current programming but it resets the unit back to its original state when you purchased it. here are the directions from page 53 in your manual.


Resetting the Scanner
If the scanner's display locks up or stops operating
properly, you might need to reset the scanner.
Caution: This procedure clears all the information
you have stored in the scanner. Before you reset the
scanner, try turning it off and on to see if it begins
working properly. Reset the scanner only when you
are sure it is not working properly.
1. Turn off the scanner.
2. While holding down 2, 9, and Hold, turn on the
scanner. It takes about 3 seconds to initialize
and CLEAr appears.

Hi, It sounds to me like your keypad is locked. Pg 63 of your manual.
***using the keylock ***
Once you program your scanner, you can protect it from accidental program changes by turning on the key lock feature. When the keypad is locked, the only controls that operate are FUNC, key , SQ, and VOL. You cannot activate the keylock while you are entering a frequency into a channel. To turn on the keylock, press FUNC then key . Key locked appears for about 1 second. Key locked appears when you press any key after locking the keypad.
To turn off the keylock, press FUNC then key . The scanner beeps three times and Key unlocked appears.
The only other choice I see if that does not work would be to initialize it. Pg 84 of your manual. Hope this helps you,, Mechanic
