Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop
My dell dimension 2400 keeps making a loud "clicking" noise intermittently in the (drive ?) tower part...............just like the sound it makes just before it finally goes to idle on shutdown. There is no particular pattern as to when it will do it. i.e. happens when not using and also when using internet, email etc but is getting more frequent than previously. Anything to worry about ?
Here is a test for it. Go to the start button > programs > accessories > system tools > disc defragmenter. Run a defragmentation on "C" drive and see if you can hear a lot of clicking, Normal hard drive activity will sound like rapid fires clicks but should not be incredibly louder than you are used to. If there has been an increase in the volume of the clicking sound that is out of the ordinary, then I would guess that the read/write head on the hard drive is starting to fail. and that sound you hear may be it slamming itsefl back oand forth as it is reading the discs. I would venture to say that having a bootable backup may be in order or at least an external or flash drive to save your documents, pictures, music...etc.
