Wire a 120v 15a to 9vdc or 12vdc battery make sure you have no voltage out of the 240 side. with the unit running plug into the 120v receptacl QUICKLY pull out. check power out put. if it did'nt work check your battery, than do it again twice as long. you must check all component before doing this to make sure you don't have any other fail-er. this is danger-us be careful. good luck

North star 5500 generator works fine but on voltage output

It's very common for the connectors between the alternator and power outlets to come loose on these. Give them a check and tighten as necessary.

Troubleshoot troy bilt generator

Check that the GFI receptical is not tripped Check that there are no blown fuses or tripped breakers Verify that the engine is running at full RPM If there is still no output, then either the field needs to be flashed (look on line to find a video on how to do this - YouTube), or the generator will need further diagnostics.

How does a compass always point to due north?

"Due North," by definition, is the direction towards the earth's north pole; or, visually at night, towards Polaris, the north star. Therefore, compasses generally do NOT point towards due North but, rather, point towards "magnetic north," as the other responder described, which is a variably located at some distance from True North, depending upon where the north-locating compass is situated on our planet. In most circumstances magnetic North is close enough so that people are willing to accept it as North in general terms. However, depending on your location, and upon seasonal changes caused by Earth's wobbling rotation (called precession) true North can be many degrees off from magnetic (from your compass's) North. In those cases true North must be determined using declination charts, which will tell you how many degrees to add or subtract on you compass in order to determine true North by the Magnetic North your compass is pointing to. For example, if magnetic North is 10 degrees west of true North at your compass's location (that is, your compass is actually pointing 10 degrees to the "left" of North), then you would correct by considering the +10-degree bearing point on your compass dial as True North--and, likewise, add 10 degrees to any bearing line you happen to determine using your compass. You have one other way of finding True North, which is celestially, by sighting towards the Pole star, aka Polaris, aka the North Star...that is, providing that the sky is UNcloudy and unsunny enough for the star to be visible. Of course, that only works for those located in the morthern hemisphere. Those south of the equator have a "south pole" star but it is not as accurate as Polaris in the northern hemisphere.

Will not generate or weld, was working ok last time it was running about 1 year ago.

It probably has lost all residual magnetic field from the rotor.

You may need to "flash" the field to restore operation.

Search Google for instructions. Sometimes others have found that plugging in an electric drill that does NOT have a throtling trigger and spinning it while connected to the generator will get the generation started again. There are other methods as well.

Powermate 5500 no Power on plugs, shorted stator symptoms?

Stator resistances should be around .5 ohms. This may look like a short to you. Unhook the regulator from the field brushes and put 12 volts on the field winding. you should get output to partially light a bulb..maybe 60 volts. Remember to use 12 volts dc on the fields and don't reverse the polarity.
If there is output then the avr(voltage regulator) is probably bad. If there is no voltage then check the resistance on the brush contacts. through the bushes and field. Maybe around 25 ohms. Your generator manual can give the exact ranges. No resistance then clean the brushes and slip rings and check again. No resistance...take reading on the slip rings. No resistance...open field...bad rotor. Good luck....keep posting until problem is resolved.

I have a miller blue star 6000. I started it up but its not putting out any power.

By any chance has this generator been sitting for a while, or been dropped? That's a common symptom. The generator has lost its' residual magnatism. The exiter field needs to be flashed. Either follow the instructions in you user manual or see this link:
http://www.dieselduck.net/machine/03%20electricity/flashing_generator.htm

Avoid this problem in the future by running the generator with a load on it for 10 minutes or so every once in a while.

North Star 5500/ lost one leg of the 220v

Small generators like this almost always have 2 stator windings 180 degrees out pf phase, that's how it makes the 220.
At the back (maybe side) of the outlet box should be a molex type plug that has the wires from the stator, get an ohm meter and measure them (with the generator shut off of course). You should find that you've got 4 wires in the plug, 1 wire for each end of 2 coils. From one end to the other of each coil you should measure less than an ohm, between the coils there is usually no connection, but some models have the neutral ends of each coil connected together inside the generator housing.

It sounds to me like you've got one of the power windings open...
