What's the voltage rating for the bulb ?

current flow would be approx 2.65 Amp, the switch should sustain atleast 30 - 50% excess current, 4 or 5 amp switch would be a better choice.

Passion plus charging problem


Your bike is designed to have a 35/35 watt headlight bulb. Regardless of fitting a slightly higher capacity battery and rectifier, you have probably blown the rectifier, battery and possibly the alternator. HID is too powerful for your poor little bikes electrical system to deal with. I would try to get a halogen 45/40 watt bulb and try that if your electrical system is still OK.

Hi,
Your Briggs & Stratton uses a dual circuit type alternator. One side of the unit produces up to 3 amps of DC electricity via a one way diode so that only the positive charged electrons pass through converting the AC from the alternator into DC after passing through the diode. This wire will have a slight lump just before the wire terminates at the plug. This is the wire that will be red and it needs to be connected either to the battery side of the solenoid or directly to the positive terminal of the battery. This keeps the battery charged an also provides enough power at full speed to run the electric clutch.
The other wire does not pass through a diode and therefore produces AC current for the lighting system only. This will be the black wire after the connector. The black wire connects directly to the headlight switch. The AC side produces 5 amps at full speed and therefore enough to power 60 watts of lighting at 12 volts. The typical 1156 bulb uses 28 watts x 2 = 56 watts and if the unit has taillights they are normally 3 watt bulbs. The headlights will be dim at low speed and reach full brightness at full speed.
In Summary, red wire to battery and black wire to light switch.

If i was to change headlight globes from 55 watt low/65 watt high to xenon halogen 90 watt low/100 watt high is there any problems


Most OE factory wiring is marginal as far as amperage carrying capability goes. They installed wiring fine for the stock bulbs and switch. A lot of vehicles send power to the lights..head and running...through the light switch on the dash. This causes it's own problems as switches are the weak link in the lighting system.

If you run 100watt bulbs you will need to power the bulbs via a 40 amp relay switched by the light switch so the switch does not carry the amperage load through it's contacts.

Doing so will reduce the voltage drop to the bulbs as a 2 volt drop will cause the bulbs to be only 75% as bright as they would be with the full 13.5 volt running voltage..

You run a fused wire from the battery or power distribution block to the relay that should be mounted within 6 inches of the closest h/l bulb. Then from the relay to the head light bulb/s. The front and rear running lamps can remain as factory as they are low amperage draw and original light switch will work because you now no longer run power to the h/lamps through the switch.

How many 5 watt outside lights can you power with a 20 amp breaker?


Volts x amps= watts.
20 amp breaker x 125 volts = 2500 watts.
However, electrician use the 80% rule, so multiply 2500 x 80% = 2000 watts.
So if you have 20 amp breaker, and 12 gauge wire, and 20 amp switch, and distance is less than 150 feet, then watt load is 2000 watts or 400 5-watt bulbs.
Keep in mind that most switches are 15 amp, and not 20 amp.
Recalculate for 15 amp switch = 1875 watts x 80% = 1500 watts or 300 5-watt bulbs.

I have a trailer house that has a 100 amp breaker box in it. I has gas for heat, water heater and stove. I am changing them to electric. Will I need to change the panel put to a 200 amp.


Its probably not a bad idea. Thats alot for a 100A panel to handle, a range needs a 50A, a water heater needs 30A, and the heat will need a 50A or a 60A breaker... Plus whatever else is in the house will be a bit more than the 100A service can handle. But if you don't have the money it will do for a while because for the most part they won't all be pulling at the same time. Word to the wise get at least a 30 space panel when you upgrade, I always install a 40 space panel because for the cost difference its well worth it for future needs because you'll fill it up quicker than you think and you'll have space for anything else you may want to add later on. I just installed a 1000 W 3-way toggle dimmer for a load of 12 75 W recessed lights, each holding 65W bulbs. When I turn the lights on, the metal plate around the dimmer gets very hot. Is this normal?


The watt rating is absolutely critical to the operation of the device.
The high heat is a direct result of too much amperage flowing through the dimmer.

Reduce your wattage immediately or stop using the dimmer.
You have a fire hazard.

According to the math, you have 20 - 65 Watt bulbs
Change 12 of the bulbs to 40 watt and you will drop to the 1000W max.
12 x 40 = 480W
8 x 65 = 520W
Total = 1000

However I am worried about this circuit.
A typical 15 amp switch (not a dimmer, but the switch) is maxxed-out at 1440 Watts.
So if you had 20 100 watt bulbs for 2000 Watts, it would heat up the 15 amp switch
It seems very odd that an electrician would put 20 lights on one circuit without having a 20 amp switch and 12 gauge wire.
Look at the markings on the switch you replaced and look for amps or watts.
And then look at the color of the wire cable inside your box ... 12 gauge wire is yellow and the lighter-weight 14 gauge wire is white.
If you have a white wire going to all those lights, then you are going to burn down the house unless the total wattage is reduced.
Volts X Amps = Watts.

I think your circuit needs a review to make sure it has the correct wire.

This being said, Lutron makes 1800 Watt dimmers.
You can web search: 1800Watt single pole dimmer
If you have yellow-colored 12 gauge wire, it can carry up to 1920 Watts

Purchased the 70 watt fixture and supplier said I could put in a 35 watt bulb because I didn't want it so bright. The light goes on but exceeds 35 watts and then shuts off after 5 min. Is it possible to...

The simplest thing to do would be to use the 70 watt bulb and then install a dimmer switch...that way you can dimm to what ever level you want and still have the full brightness if you want....
dimmer switches are not that exspensive and are easy to install...

Yes it will possibly just be a little brighter... but should do no harm. The original 2 would equal 25 Watts the replacement 35 Watts.. the 5 Watts in neither here nor there.

Low voltage only or can timer be used for 110 v


1 hp= 750 watts
125 vac = 125 volts alternating current, wall outlets
5 amp= 5amps

125vac x 5amps= 625 watts

a timer is a switch with a clock on it. just like a switch in a lamp cord.
